Today I’m talking about what inspired me to write a crime thriller. Though I usually romantic mysteries Hacked Up is more of a thriller. It has less romance than I regularly write and the focus on the crimes is stronger.
I call myself an organic writer though most people call it being a panster. I don’t write with an outline but I do have an idea in my head about where I’m going and where I want to end up but I didn’t set out to write a thriller when I started this book. The idea started with the exposure of the adultery website Ashley Madison. I played What If? and went from there.
I struggled a bit in the beginning. My main character, Detective Peter Tao, changed a bit from my early drafts. At first I considered having him be a bit of a player and showing him having sex with a fuck buddy. But that seemed to take away from his seriousness as a cop and I wanted the focus to be on the murders rather than what was going on in Peter’s bed. So I did something I don’t normally do.
I plotted.

I didn’t plot out the story so much as I did the murders. I came up with the names of the victims and some information about them, including where they were killed. I already knew the why and how of the murders, which I won’t share here because those are important parts of the story. But once I knew the number of victims and all that it started to come together.
A good friend of mine, Marie Sexton, read my early draft and pointed out some problems. (Translated: She tore it apart. Which is what I needed.) After that, an important piece of the story came to me. I changed one of the victims. But, again, I can’t share exactly what I changed because that’s a surprise in the book and I’m not going to spoil anything. But once I made that one single change the thriller aspect of the book came together.
Forgive the cliché, but now it was personal for Detective Tao. He had a personal reason for wanting to solve the crimes other than it was his job. Writing this book was a lot of fun and I hope my readers have as much fun reading it. Though fun might not be the right word. It’s a bit on the dark side with some mutilated victims and the romance is just a sub plot. But I think it’s wild ride readers will like.

Ethan has been reading mysteries and thrillers since he was young. He’s had a thing for guys in uniform for just as long. That may have influenced the stories he writes.
He’s a native Oregonian with two kids. One of whom has made him a grandfather three times over; even though he is way too young.
