Martin Lynch has spent the past few years following his best friend Graham’s example, dressing up to go out to their favorite rock club on Friday nights, and going through the motions with girls, always missing that spark everyone talks about.

One night in Jezebels nightclub on Martin’s twentieth birthday, he meets Beck, an androgynous person he initially tries to tell himself is “Becky”. But eventually when Martin feels that excitement he’s never experienced before and the evidence becomes too much to ignore, he’s forced to admit to himself that Beck is a man and accept that he could be gay.

Martin fears the reactions of his best friend and his parents, but in his heart he knows that finding Beck has given him the one thing that’s always been missing, and he prepares to deal with the reactions of family and friends when their secret is discovered.

Excerpt
I left the flat at half past one and caught a bus to the adjoining town of Grimsby. When it pulled into the bus station at ten to two, and I looked out the window at the Barge which was right next to the station, panic filled me. I felt like a real shit for having asked Beck to meet me, and now I was going to ditch her… him. What if I’m wrong? What if she really is Becky?
I stumbled off the bus and dragged a hand through my hair. I’d never been so confused in my life. I’d known—I had to have known when we were kissing, and I’d been rock hard, desperate to touch and be touched. No one had ever made me feel like that. The way Beck’s lips felt on mine, firm and eager; the way his body felt in my arms until he pulled away.
I sat down on a bench and rested my elbows on my knees, my head hanging. Was this why I’d felt so little with all those girls? I really wanted someone like Beck? What would my parents say? And Graham?
“Fuck,” I muttered. Five minutes. I couldn’t be seen sitting outside the pub looking like I wanted to run away. I got to my feet, strode across the paved area toward the Barge, and stepped onboard. In two minutes I had a bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale in my hand and had taken a seat in a corner, relieved that no one I knew was in the pub. In fact other than me there were only four other people huddled in a group. I wiped my hands on the edges of the seat, took a gulp of my beer, and checked my watch. Two minutes. My heart slammed against my ribs and I grabbed for the beer again, desperate to relieve my dry mouth.
Minutes passed and I repeatedly glanced at the steps leading up to the entrance, but no one else entered the pub. I finished my beer as slowly as I could manage, and eventually two men came in, but neither one was Beck. One of them had a pet rat sitting on his shoulder and I stared in fascination as he collected drinks and crisps from the bar, and sat down with his friend. He fed the rat bits of the crisps while he sipped his drink. Weird.
Two thirty came and went, and the time crawled onward to three o’clock. I returned to the bar for another beer and hovered there, unsure whether to stay or go. I’d never been stood up before. Maybe Beck had got held up. Or maybe he’d changed his mind the same way I had.
I stayed just in case. I made my second drink last until almost four o’clock, holding my breath every time someone new entered the pub, and my spirits sinking a little more each time it wasn’t Beck. Eventually, I left my empty bottle on the nearby table and made my way up the steps and out into the humid air. The word pathetic came to mind when I thought about how I’d sat there alone for two hours when I’d clearly been stood up. I’d have laughed at anyone else doing that and called them a loser.

By the time I reached home I was fed up and angry with myself. It was probably for the best that Beck hadn’t shown up. I’d only been going to tell him it wasn’t going to happen, so he’d saved me the trouble. Except I’d still sat there for two hours, waiting and hoping.

Tracy's Review:

5 Stars

So let me set the scene. 1990's glam rock era. Long hair, make-up, spandex. Bands like Poison, Aerosmith, and Motley Crew. Martin's flatmate, Graham is taking him out for his 20th birthday. He and Graham spend a lot of weekends trolling the clubs and hooking up with chicks. For Martin, something has always been missing. Some spark. He finds that spark when he meets Becky. But what happens when this girl Becky, who turns him on like like no other, turns out to be a guy actually named Beck, short for Beckett. Will Martin embrace it or run from it?

This was a fast paced, sweet and sexy read. I read it in a matter of hours and it hooked me from the first sentence. Martin and Beck had a chemistry and passion that came off the pages at you. You could just feel it in the air. If your looking for a sweet, but not a diabetic coma inducing sweet, sexy and hot little read, with just a touch of angst, this is a perfect book to curl up with!

About Louise

Louise Lyons comes from a family of writers. Her mother has a number of poems published in poetry anthologies, her aunt wrote poems for the church, and her grandmother sparked her inspiration with tales of fantasy. Louise first ventured into writing short stories at the grand old age of 8, mostly about little girls and ponies. She branched into romance in her teens, and MM romance a few years later, but none of her work saw the light of day until she discovered FanFiction in her late twenties.
Posting stories based on some of her favorite movies, provoked a surprisingly positive response from readers. This gave Louise the confidence to submit some of her work to publishers, and made her take her writing “hobby” more seriously.

Louise lives in the UK, about an hour north of London, with a mad Dobermann, and a collection of tropical fish and tarantulas. She works in the insurance industry by day, and spends every spare minute writing. She is a keen horse-rider, and loves to run long-distance. Some of her best writing inspiration comes to her, when her feet are pounding the open road. She often races into the house afterward, and grabs pen and paper to make notes.

Louise has always been a bit of a tomboy, and one of her other great loves is cars and motorcycles. Her car and bike are her pride and joy, and she loves to exhibit the car at shows, and take off for long days out on the bike, with no one for company but herself.

**Copy provided to Bayou Book Junkie by author/publisher in exchange for and honest review**

Landon is a very lonely gay man in Montgomery County, Mississippi. The only company he has are his parents, who are aware that he's gay, but even though he doesn't flaunt his sexuality and he's a good man, responsible and caring, people don't really accept him. He works for his dad at their family's saw mill making deliveries and helping with management duties, while putting on hold his dream of teaching. Until his father hires Jay Hill as their new manager and Landon is confronted with crushing on a straight man.

Jay is divorced and has two children who live with him while their mother completes her studies in Atlanta. He is hardworking and even if his marriage didn't work, he remains friends with his ex-wife, Bethany, who was Landon's babysitter when he was younger. Landon and Jay develop an easy friendship and start spending time together, and slowly Jay begins to realize he might not be as straight as he always thought he was.

I loved Landon. He was reliable and sweet and patient. Just what Jay needed in this journey of self-discovery. He never pushed, even when he wanted to. I'm not saying he was perfect, but he was perfect for Jay for sure. He was so lonely, my heart just broke for him.

I adored Jay, too! There were so many things happening to him all at once, his children, Bethany, other people meddling, and his own confusion at his growing attraction to a man. I loved that even if he wasn't comfortable with the situation, he didn't push Landon away and that he was always aware of not wanting to hurt Landon while he sorted things out.

I absolutely loved this story! It was a fantastic, heartwarming tale of love and self-discovery and learning to become the best possible version of yourself that you can possibly be, even with so many things going against you. And Kade, you made me cry, you made me feel and care for these characters of yours, that's a testament to how good it was!

I hope he isn't pissed I stole this pic from his fb ~ Tracy

Kade Boehme is a southern boy without the charm, but all the sass. Currently residing in New York City, he lives off of ramen noodles and too much booze. He is the epitomy of dorkdom, only watching TV when Rachel Maddow or one of his sports teams is on. Most of his free time is spent dancing, arguing politics or with his nose in a book. He is also a hardcore Britney Spears fangirl and has an addiction to glitter.

It was after writing a short story about boys who loved each other for a less than reputable adult website that he found his true calling, and hopefully a bit more class. He hopes to write about all the romance that he personally finds himself allergic to but that others can fall in love with. He maintains that life is real and the stories should be, as well.

Is there something in life that you're afraid of, like heart pounding, shortness of breath, Jesus Christ I'm going to pass out, scared? For Leo Harris that something is heights.

Excerpt:
Leo leaned against the brick wall, desperately trying to gather his courage. All he needed to do was cross the street and enter the building opposite. Leo had never considered doing something like this in his life. Hell, he wouldn't be here now if it wasn't for the gift voucher his nosy sister and her equally pain-in-the-ass husband had given him.

"You need to get out of the house more, live a little," his sister had berated him as he'd stared down at the piece of paper in his hands, unsure exactly what he was feeling.
"I get out plenty," Leo tried defending himself.
"No you don't, and you know it. You may physically leave the premises to go to work and do your grocery shopping, but you never go out and have any fun." Teresa sighed, and Leo really felt the urge to clip her across the back of the head. "You don't go out clubbing, very rarely go to restaurants, and you refuse point-blank to start a profile on a dating website."
There was no way Leo was putting himself out there at the mercy of all those desperate men who were just looking for a quick hook-up. He was sure that scattered in amongst all those horny fellas, he might find one or two that seriously wanted a relationship, but he wasn't willing to wade through all the toads in order to get to his prince charming. If the man existed—and that was a big if as far as Leo was concerned—he doubted they were fated to meet through an online dating service.
"Teresa, I like my life. I'm happy." Once again he tried to placate his sister, to no avail. Just because she was happily married with two-point-three children didn't mean everyone else had to be.
"No, Leo, you're not." Teresa waved her hand in his face when Leo started to object again. "I know you and I love you. Please just do this for me." She fluttered her lashes at Leo.
He heaved a sigh, knowing he would give in to her, just like he always did. As annoying and meddling as his sister could be, he did love her dearly and couldn't imagine a world without her in it. The snickering from across the room was not lost on Leo, but he decided to ignore Blake. After all, the man was just as bad as Leo when it came to giving into to Teresa's demands.
Leo looked down once again at the piece of paper. "Seriously?"
Teresa laughed at him. "You're going to love it."
Somehow he doubted that.

Even now two weeks later, Leo still didn't like this idea any more than he had when Teresa had given him the voucher for his birthday.
Leo checked his watch and sighed as he realised that if he didn't get a move on, he would be late. He heaved himself off the brick wall and crossed the road. Leo's stomach roiled and he hoped to Christ he wasn't going to be sick.
The large glass doors whooshed open and Leo stepped inside, heading in the direction of the register. As he waited in the line, Leo looked all around him. Men and women perused the shelves filled with jumpers, magnets, trinkets, and stuffed bears all containing the Sydney BridgeClimb logo. His eyes settled on a square column with signed photographs of famous people who had completed the climb.
Before Leo knew it, he was being called to the desk. "Morning," the cheerful girl behind the counter said.
"Morning," Leo replied, more than a little subdued. He handed over the voucher and waited. He was asked to confirm he didn't have any medical problems that would prevent him from completing the climb today, and Leo thought seriously about lying, then reluctantly shook his head.
"Brilliant, you'll love it up there."
Leo smiled but was' sure it 'came out more like a grimace.
"Here's your ticket." She handed Leo a thin rectangle. "And this is your voucher for your photos."
"Photos?" Leo asked in confusion.
"Yes, when the ticket was booked, three photos were also purchased. You will be able to choose upon your return from a selection the guide will take of you while you're up on the bridge."
Crap, Teresa probably wants proof that I actually followed through. "Thank you," Leo said as he took hold of the photo voucher.
"You're most welcome." She pointed to her left. "If you would go up those stairs, your climb should be starting in roughly five minutes."
Leo nodded and stepped to the side, allowing the next person in line to move forward. He followed the instructions and walked up the large staircase, bypassing all the shelves of tourist memorabilia. If he really wanted something else to commemorate this foolhardy trip, he could always pick it up on the way out.
Upstairs was just a small balcony. Roughly three metres in front of him was a wall with three doors, two on the left side and one nearly in front of him. To his right, there was another square pillar with signed photos along with three touchscreen computer monitors.
Leo headed to the left where there was a large round seating area currently occupied by several people. They were all watching a television screen hung up by the farthest door, which showed people getting ready for the climb through the various stages and gave them an idea of what to expect.
He sat on a small piece of available sofa and watched the screen with rapt attention. Leo was so engrossed in what was going on he nearly missed it when some of the people around him stood. Leo looked around, startled, and noticed one of the doors open with a young man standing in it collecting tickets from those going inside.
Leo checked the clock on the wall and noticed it read the start time of his climb. He quickly stood and made his way over.
"Morning," Leo greeted as he handed over his ticket.
"Good morning."
The man gave Leo back the ticket, less the stub, and motioned him inside. The room wasn't overly large and wasn't well lit either. A large horseshoe-shaped seating area ran down the sides and back of the room. People sat with clipboards on their laps busily filling out paperwork.
Leo made his way to a vacant space, picked up the board, and unclipped the pen. Just as he was about to start writing, he was distracted as he noticed another person walk through the door. Leo nearly caught his breath at just how gorgeous the guy was. Broad shoulders, a trim waist, and enough height that Leo wanted to climb the man like a squirrel climbs a tree. Short dark brown hair, trimmed on the sides with just a little length on top, his expression was one part kind, three parts sexy, and had Leo wanting to swallow his damn tongue.
The man wore a tank top and a pair of footy shorts, but Leo could see the bike shorts clearly underneath. They hugged his thighs like no one's business, and Leo wished he was that article of clothing more than anything. His gaze travelled all the way down. The man's dark curly leg hair covered well-defined thighs and calves, and had Leo wanting to groan. Socks and sneakers completed the outfit.
Leo knew his perusal of the man had only taken seconds, but it felt like he had been staring at the guy for an entire lifetime. When the man headed in Leo's direction, he found himself hard pressed to pull his gaze away and concentrate on what he was supposed to be doing. Leo wanted to curse his luck when the man took the empty seat on Leo's left.

Successful lawyer Jeremy Speer has it all—a loving husband, a beautiful home, and a cherished dream that’s about to become reality. He’s learned not to take happiness for granted, meeting the challenges of life and love head-on with unwavering commitment and fierce devotion. A series of tragic events leave Jeremy shattered, adrift on a sea of unimaginable pain. He’s able to piece his life back together, but instead of embracing it, he merely exists, using isolation and punishing physical exertion to keep the world at bay.

High school teacher Kai Daniels has a heart for at-risk kids—he was one himself, and a teenage brush with the law and some troubled years behind bars left him scarred inside and out. With courage, hard work, and the support of friends, he’s built a fulfilling life that leaves no time for a relationship.

An intense encounter with Kai at a gay club ignites a spark in Jeremy that he thought was extinguished forever, but he’s unwilling to destroy the fragile peace he’s managed to create, and he leaves Kai humiliated and disappointed. Things should have ended there, but a bizarre occurrence brings the two together in a way neither of them expected.

Jeremy stopped trying to pull away, dropping his gaze to the man’s lips, which were moist and slightly parted, the hoop through the full bottom one gleaming in the club lights.
“Have a drink with me, Sexy, and tell me your name.” The man leaned away and gestured for the bartender, the motion causing his T-shirt to pull even tighter across his chest, outlining what looked like a bar through his left nipple… oh sweet Jesus. Jeremy had never found piercings sexy before, but now all he could think about was that lip ring teasing the tip of his aching cock, feeling that hard silver bar in his own mouth while he tugged at it with his teeth and bit down….
Jeremy groaned under his breath, and the man gave him a knowing look as he started to hand Jeremy an ice-cold bottle of beer. Jeremy hesitated once again, and the man set the beer on the bar top and then gripped Jeremy’s hand, pulling it between his legs, pressing the palm against a steel-hard erection. Jeremy squeezed, and it was the man’s turn to groan.
“You wouldn’t leave me like this, would you?” he asked hoarsely. In answer Jeremy cupped him a little more firmly and squeezed again, enjoying the way the man closed his eyes, tipping his head back.
Jeremy took his hand away from the man’s cock and reached for his beer, taking a few gulps while watching the man do the same with his own drink.
“My name’s Jeremy.”
The man said something in return, but the music suddenly seemed to ramp up several more decibels and he couldn’t hear. He leaned closer. “What?”
The man gripped the back of Jeremy’s neck and put his lips directly to his ear, his hot breath making goose bumps pebble Jeremy’s skin. “My name’s Kai.” Kai licked the lobe of Jeremy’s ear and then bit it, and Jeremy groaned. He cupped Kai’s chin in his hand, stroking his thumb along his bottom lip.
“I’m going to fuck you so hard, Kai,” he breathed, leaning closer. Kai parted his lips in anticipation but Jeremy barely brushed their lips together before pulling away.
“Teasing me ain’t gonna make my cock any harder, dude,” Kai gasped on a laugh. “In fact I’m about to come in my goddamn pants.”
Jeremy reached between Kai’s legs again and palmed him, exulting in the feel of Kai lifting his hips into the touch. “If you do, I’ll lick you clean and start all over again.”
When Kai arched his neck back once more in helpless pleasure, Jeremy leaned in and dragged his parted lips up the length of that corded flesh and back down before sucking lightly on the hollow of Kai’s throat, tasting his skin.
“Jesus Christ, let’s get out of here,” Kai moaned, his accented voice husky with arousal. “I’ve got a room right down the street.”

Author Interview:

Thanks so much to Bayou Book Club for hosting me today!  I’ve recently released my second novel, Signs of Life, through Dreamspinner Press, and I sat down to answer a few questions:
1.     What inspired this story?
Actually, this story was inspired by a local newspaper article I read about a man whose wife was killed in a car accident.  She was pregnant and they were able to deliver the baby, but sadly he died a few days later.  I couldn’t imagine what this husband and father was feeling:  One day his family was alive and well and the next they were just…gone.  How did he cope?  How did he go on?  I felt that would make a compelling story and character study, and Signs of Life was born.
2.     Is there a message in this book you would like readers to grasp?
Even though the themes of grief and loss permeate this story, my ultimate intention was for it to be a celebration of the resiliency of the human spirit, gratitude for the gift of second chances and our capacity for discovering renewed happiness and joy in unexpected places.
3.   What is your favorite genre to read?
Pretty much all I read anymore is non-fiction, especially autobiographies.  The last few I’ve read and loved are Soldier of Change, by Steve Snyder-Hill, War by Sebastian Junger and It’s What I Do by Lynsey Addario.  I can highly recommend each and every one of these books.
4. Can you share the project(s) you are currently working on?
Right now I’m working on a May/December m/m romance featuring an Afghanistan war veteran and the father of the veteran’s teammate, whose son was killed in action.  They are brought together in sadness by the son’s death, but they become close friends and finally fall in love, finding healing in each other.
5. Besides writing what else do you enjoy doing?

I love reading, of course, and spending time with my 5th and 6th grade boys, who definitely keep me on my toes!

Tracy and Mari's Review

Tracy: The first thing I'll say is, it's gonna be a tough read when the author has you sobbing in the first chapter! OMG!! Attorney, Jeremy Speer's story starts off so heart wrenchingly sad. After he suffers a major loss, he packs up and takes off. We next see Jeremy two years later. He has relocated from California to Oregon. He meets high school teacher, Kai Daniels at a gay bar. After an anonymous hook-up in a back alley, Jeremy takes off, without even a word. These two men are thrown back together by extenuating circumstances. What happens next? You'll have to read to find out!

Mari: So true, Tracy! I was almost afraid to keep on reading after that first chapter wrecked me so badly! It was so sad, everything Jeremy had to go through after the death of his family would have wrecked anyone and yet, he pulled through everything. It wasn't easy and up until the moment when he meets Kai, he's barely living, more like going through the motions. Kai reawakens him, and even if he feels guilty at first, he can't stay away from Kai.

Tracy: I loved "Everything Changes". After reading it I was devastated to check out goodreads only to discover this was debut novel, so when I saw the book had a sequel, I couldn't wait to sink my teeth into it! Melanie didn't disappoint. This was an amazing story. Sad, but amazing. It was also HOT!! Hello!! Melanie can write a hot and dirty sex scene.

This is a story of growth, for both men. They both learn to say goodbye to the past, so they can move on to the future. Their characters were well developed. I loved them and I felt like I knew them. The chemistry between them was amazing. The book moved along at a nice pace and held my attention from the first to last page.

Loved both books in the series and highly recommend them!

Mari: I haven't read Everything Changes, but I plan to as soon as possible. And I agree about this being an amazing, heart-wrenching story. Jeremy and Kai are awesome together, the sex scenes were sizzling hot, but above all I adored that they both were willing to do just about everything for each other. They wanted to protect, cherish and just be there for the other, and even when it sort of blew on their faces, they managed to overcome it all. I started this book crying and ended up crying, just for a different motive. Definitely recommendable!
