People’s Art on Stephen’s Green
There are worse was to spend a dry and sunny Sunday afternoon than exploring the artists displaying their work on the railings surrounding Stephen’s Green. On average six ‘People’s Art’ weekends take place in that location every year, and they provide artists with a wonderful opportunity to display their work to a larger audience than they might otherwise reach.
I have to admit that I’m not sure I would be persistent enough to chance the always unpredictable Irish weather if I had works of art to display. I tend to agree with Xander when he reflects:
“Besides, displaying art in the open air in Ireland is a nightmare most of the time. Today may be sunny, but most days you spend more time covering and uncovering your work than you do selling it. What’s more, this time of year sunny doesn’t equal warm. You could freeze your balls off standing still all day while waiting for potential, but more than likely elusive, buyers.”
But when the weather does cooperate, looking at original art while strolling in the sunshine, probably with buskers playing music in the background, can be a pure delight. And because Stephen’s Green is located right in the centre of Dublin, this artistic treat can easily be combined with a shopping spree, visits to museums, or just a leisurely walk through the hustle and bustle of Dublin, if that takes your fancy.
As for the quality of the art on offer on those railings…. I guess that is pretty much a matter of personal taste.
