SHORT BLURB

After a life changing event makes Alfie the legal guardian of his estranged step-siblings, as well as a chance meeting one drunken night, he finds his world turned upside down when he discovers that everything he thought he knew about himself was catastrophically wrong.
Before meeting Alfie and his family, Fear was content with his casual hookups and one-night stands, purposefully keeping everyone at an arm’s length. As Alfie comes into his burgeoning feelings, a curveball shakes the two men, threatening to destroy Fear and his new found chance at happiness with Alfie.
With everything thrown into turmoil, Fear decides to fight for those he loves, Alfie and his family included. Will they be able to survive the collateral damage around them, or will they lose everything?
*** Copy provided to Bayou Book Junkie in exchange for a fair and honest review. ***

Alfie has to relocate from the UK to the US to take care of his little siblings after his father's death. Both his dad's death and the fact that he'd made provisions to leave Griffin and Lily under his care, when he hasn't really kept in touch with Alfie, came as quite of a surprise, but Alfie can't let his siblings go into foster care.

One chance encounter changes his life forever when he crosses paths with Fear, a 6'8" tattoo artist. The fact that he's attracted to a man when he's always considered himself straight, takes second place to the feelings Fear ellicits in him and how perfectly they seem to fit together. However, there are several things that threaten to destroy their chance at being together.

I loved Alfie! He's fun, self-deprecating, down-to-earth, a bit crazy and overall fantastic. I loved that he was so willing to give into his attraction to Fear, despite everything else happening to them. And Fear was an adorable giant. So sweet and dependable, the strong, silent type for sure. Alfie and Fear had a lot of chemistry and were hot together. They just seemed to fit very well, perhaps because of how different they were.

The secondary characters were amazing, too, especially the kids and Alfie's mom, who was a riot!

The book was interesting, well-written, fast-paced, with a lot of action and some twists thrown in for good measure, with well-developed characters, even if some parts were a bit rushed over or made me confused with all the things happening, but all in all, this is a very good debut book for River Mitchell! I'll definitely will be checking out the next book in this series!

Very recommendable!

Rating: 4.5 Stars!!!

AUTHOR BIO:

I have always been a lover of anything that allows my imagination to fly. Movies, music, art and of course books of all genres. The opportunity to slip away to another world and live out all sorts of fantasies was the perfect happy place I needed at times, my great escape.

It didn’t take long for my love of reading to transform into a desire to write a book of my very own. But being severely dyslexic I never thought that would be a possibility. Enter my guardian angel with her un-fleeting encouragement and I started out on a rollercoaster journey to make my dream come true.

When I am not writing I can often be found listening to rock music while delving into the life of a gorgeous Alpha male, drawing and painting or trying to teach my cats, Boo fishcakes and Edward Elton to play fetch. (Don’t ask they think they’re dogs and I am not going to squash their dream).

My biggest wish is that people could find their happy place in the words that I write, and hope that I can inspire others to know that if I can do it they can share their amazing worlds and imaginations too.

Excerpt:
Justin’s phone chimed with a text, interrupting Sean’s train of thought.
Justin picked up his phone to read the message. “Ugh.” He put the phone back down without typing a reply and ran his hands through his hair.
“What’s up?”
Justin sighed. “It’s our work Christmas party next weekend. I’ve already got a ticket, and nearly everyone in the office goes, but it’s for partners as well. One of my co-workers, Jess, is bugging me to come, but I can’t face it. I bet Andy’s going to bring his new boyfriend. I know he’s a shit and I shouldn’t let him get to me, but the thought of him parading around with my replacement, and me being there on my own, isn’t very appealing.”
“Is it too late to find someone to take?”
“No, they don’t need final numbers till Monday.”
“Well, then. Take someone else and flirt like crazy in front of him. Show him you can do better and that you’ve already moved on.”
“But I’m not ready to date. It’s only been two weeks, and I’m still at the feeling-sorry-for-myself stage.”
“I’ll go with you,” Sean offered. “I could be your date. We could pretend we’ve got together and are a couple now.”
“Yeah?” Justin looked thoughtful. “Are you sure?”
Duh. It would hardly be much of a sacrifice to flirt with Justin all night. It would actually be a relief not to have to hide the way he felt for a change.
“Sure,” Sean replied. “I think I can manage to fake that I’m arse-over-tit infatuated with you. As long as it’s only for a few hours.”
“Gee, thanks.” Justin rolled his eyes. “You really know how to make an already-wounded ego feel better. But if you’re up for it, we should totally do it. Andy was always jealous of you before you went away. He saw you as competition because we lived together and were so close. I’d love to see his face when I walk in with you on my arm. I think he’ll hate it even if he’s moved on.”
“Okay.” Sean rubbed his hands together, excited at the prospect of getting to piss off Andy. “Let’s do it! Text your friend Jess back and tell her you’re in—with a hot date.”

5 Stars

Justin and Sean have been best mates since they were seven years old. They have been through thick and thin together. They have also been in love with each other since they understood what it meant to be gay. They have never said anything to each other, keeping their feelings buried, for fear of ruining of their friendship. But when they decide to pretend to be boyfriends for Justin's office Christmas party, so Justin doesn't have to face his recent ex and his new boyfriend by himself, things heat up and they share a steamy night together, but can they have it for real?'

I haven't read a book by Jay yet, and I've read most, that I haven't loved. What Happens at Christmas was no exception. It was sweet, hot, funny and romantic. I loved both Sean and Justin and thought they made the perfect couple. They fit, and the chemistry was electrical.

The book is well written and flows well. The characters are well developed. This story was really enjoyable, and the perfect little holiday read!
