Blurb: “Lil’ Bro,

If you’re reading this, then something obviously happened and I’m not going to be around. I wanted to let you know how much I love you, and you don’t have to tear yourself up over this. I’m the one who chose to enlist, and I believe I’ve served proudly for the last few years. I know this won’t ease your mind any, but I believe I’m probably in a better place now. Please don’t be sad. I died doing what I loved, fighting for my country. I wish I could be there for you when you tell Mom and Dad about you being gay. Just know that I am with you in spirit. Look to Chase for guidance. I know he’ll be the big brother for you I can no longer be. The guys will be a great support for you, and they won’t care that you’re gay. They’re a great group of guys, and they’ll treat you just like I would. They’ll be a support system for you when Dad blows up, and you know he will. Be safe and know I will be watching out for you from the other side.

Love, Sam.”

Uncommon Valor is not just a story of a gay man, it is the fulfilling story of a young man who is on the verge of discovering his true self and he has the perfect prop to do that. He is also about to become a Dad. Will he pull through as a gay man and a Dad? Or will he fall upon the wayside and reject his newborn child, and in so doing, also reject the man of his dreams?

Last weekend with the platoon was great.

I met a ton of new people, and the guys were really supportive when I told them. I hadn’t heard anything from my Mom, so I wasn’t sure what to think about that, but I’d decided I wasn’t going to worry too much. I was on cloud nine from having spent time with people who didn’t care I was gay and treated me like one of the guys even though I wasn’t a Marine.

That all came to a halt when I ran into Tina in the dining hall on campus during the week.

Tina uses her beauty to her advantage. She’s medium height with red hair and green eyes. Whatever she said was right and she was of the opinion that no one could outsmart her. Personally, I tried to stay away from her if I possibly could.

But, she had a crush on me.

I never got the chance to tell my brother that during a night of drunkenness I had slept with her. There was a part of me that always felt something else had been involved, but I couldn’t prove it. I didn’t even know if we did anything. All I knew was I woke up the next morning in the same bed with her and both of us were naked. It wasn’t something I was proud of, and I honestly hoped I would never see her again. Unfortunately, we were both in law school together, so I knew that wasn’t going to be an option.

I’d almost completely forgotten about the incident because it had happened at the end of the semester and I had taken the summer off. The new semester had just started, and I had been lucky enough to not see her in any of my classes or around campus.

I was shocked to see her with what I would consider a baby bump, but I didn’t want to make any assumptions. I pretended to not see her, but she saw me.

“Jason! I need to talk to you,” she said, and grasped my elbow from behind.

“What do you want, Tina?” I yanked my arm out of her grasp with a snarl.

“It’s a private matter.”

“We can talk at my house, but that’s all that’s going to happen.” I turned and walked away, expecting her to follow me to the parking lot. As it turned out, we were parked fairly close to each other, and I motioned for her to follow me as I got into my car.

§

We arrived at my house and I was still trying to figure out what she wanted to talk to me about. I had a feeling I wasn’t going to like it.

Inside, she headed for the lounge. “Would you like something to drink?” I asked. When I turned to face her she held her stomach in a protective manner.

“Water would be nice.”

“Have a seat and I’ll be right back.” I said, placing my bag on the floor by the door.

When I returned, she was standing in front of the bay window looking out over the park. “Here you go.” I held out a bottle of water to her as she turned around.

“Thanks, Jason. I’m sorry to put you out like this, but I needed to talk to you and I didn’t want to do it with people around.”

“What’s going on? I haven’t seen you since the end of spring semester.” I walked over and took a seat on the couch and waited to hear what she had to say.

“I went home for summer break and some surprising news came up just before I came back to school.” She came over and sat down next to me.

“Spit it out,” I said, frustrated. I just wanted her gone; something about her really irked me.

“The thing is, just before I came back I realized that I had missed my period so I went to the doctor and took a pregnancy test. I’m pregnant.”

“What’s that got to do with me?” It felt like I had been punched in the gut.

“Well, I hadn’t been with anyone for a while before you and I hooked up at the end of the semester.” She licked her lips and wrung her hands.

“We didn’t hook up. I got way too drunk and don’t remember anything until I woke up the next morning with you by my side and naked.”

“Why do you refuse to believe that what we shared was something special?” she whined. “You know you love me, you only need to admit it and we’ll be happy together as a family.”

“It wasn’t special. What do you want from me?”

“I want you to be a father to our child. I want us to be a family.” She tried to put her hand on my arm. I pulled away.

“We will never be a family. What the HELL were you thinking? Obviously you weren’t; that’s the problem.” I walked over to the bay window and glared out. “If the child is mine I’ll support it and even take custody of him or her, but we will never be together. As soon as the baby is born I’m going to fight for custody and before I commit to anything there needs to be a paternity test, until that time you are nothing more to me than a pregnant woman. Until you have further information, I think this is all we have to talk about.”

“We’d make good parents together. Why are you refusing to admit that?” she cried.

“I have no doubt that we will be good parents, but we won’t be a couple. I’m gay and will not be in a relationship with any woman. Now, if there’s nothing else, I think that it’s time for you to leave. Let me know when you set up the paternity test and I’ll be there. We’ll talk more after the test results come back.” I opened the front door and waited for her to leave. I was being mean and harsh, but I was pissed about what had happened, mostly at myself because I let myself get wasted at that party. I wished I could remember what happened that night.

She stormed past me and went out to her car mumbling under her breath. Part of me hoped I was the father, but there was a greater part of me that hoped I would have nothing more to do with her.

3.5 Stars

There were things that I loved about this story, and things that just didn’t work. I struggled with how to rate this story, so here goes.

After losing his older brother, the only person besides his best friend Alex who knows he is gay, Jason is heartbroken. He meets Chase, one of his brothers Marine buddies at his brothers funeral and it’s instant attraction The two start seeing each other, but this book is set before the repeal of DADT, so we know this is going to be a problem right off the bat.

I loved the togetherness of this couple. They were there through the good times and the bad for one another. They supported one another, and worked through their issues together. This couple shared a good chemistry and love, even if is was VERY close to instalove. The main characters were well developed. The story was fast paced, but some of the scenes were choppy and felt incomplete. Some scenes ended much too abruptly and jumped ahead to the next scene.

Chase’s Marine buddies were well developed as well, and served as a good support system for the couple.

The plot was intriguing and the premises was good, but the story fell short. I wanted more emotion from the story. More struggle. Solutions to the MC’s situations came much to easily for these characters. I wanted to see sadness and anger and I just didn’t get the emotion I was looking for. Reading this story should have had me in knots, sitting on the edge of my seat, biting my nails, and this just didn’t happen.

I love rearms of endearments in books, if they are used correctly and spaced apart. Jason and Chase discovered the word “babe” and forgot they had names. Terms of endearments are fine to use, but not multiple times in a paragraph, when you are the only two in the room/house, because who else would you be speaking to?

All in all it wasn’t a bad read, it just needed more emotion, and some scenes needed reworking.

Author Interview:

Hi Rachel, thank you for agreeing to this interview.

1) What inspired this story?

It started off as a writing prompt that was inspired by a friend and how it feels to love your best friend who died serving our country. Besides, men in uniform can be very hot.

2) What are your favorite qualities about each of these main characters?

Hmm, my favorite qualities about Jason are his ability to see past an unfortunate event and still accept the results of it, as well as his strength to continue on his path after the loss of his brother who was his best friend. For Chase my favorite qualities are his devotion to Jason through everything and his compassion.

3) Is there a message in this book you would like readers to grasp?

Even if your family is against you, you still have those that are your family by choice.

4) Can you share the project(s) you are currently working on?

I am currently polishing up one of my earlier stories to submit for publishing. It’s a werewolf story about a young man who is abused and runs away to the only family that loves him.

5) If you could have dinner with any person in history, dead or alive, who would it be, and what would you want to talk about?

If I could have dinner with any person it would be my best friend and little brother by choice. We would talk about his passion for mining and our shared passion for books.

Ms. Ravenheart is new to the literary world, but has had the desire to write since junior high school. She moved from a small town in Iowa in time to start high school in Louisiana.

Rachel lost sight of writing as she got bogged down with sports and school. Her dream of being a writer forgotten as she looked to the future to study Political Science with the hope of going to law school when she moved to Texas.

To make her way in the world she got wrapped up in the field of nursing when she got a job as a C.N.A. and soon even her dream of law school was forgotten. Strangely, thanks to an injury, she was at home recuperating and was bored when she remembered her love for writing. Never thinking she would ever get published, she began.

It was writers like Rob Colton, Mann Ramblings, and Alicia Nordwell that inspired her creativity. She found GayAuthors.org and after some encouragement she decided to post her first story. With the enthusiasm of readers her confidence grew and she took the step to send off her first story to be published. Hopefully, the first of many.

High school senior Kalin (Lennon) Macready knows several facts for certain: John Lennon is his hero. Beaumont Finley Danforth II (Fin) is his best friend. And—this is the complicated one—he feels more for Fin than mere friendship.
For weeks, Lennon pesters Fin, who like Lennon admits to questioning his sexual orientation, for a commitment to spend twenty-four hours together exploring “the gay side of life.” Fin reluctantly agrees. Each boy will seek to answer the daunting question, Am I gay? Lennon pre-plans the day, filling the hours with what he assumes “gay life” is all about: shopping for fashionable clothing, indulging in lavish dessert crepes, boogying to Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off”, and yes, listening to show tunes.
However, Lennon quickly realizes that in creating his plan he has succumbed to the most common and distorted of gay stereotypes. Can he be gay and not fit them? And more importantly, is it possible that spending one very hard day and night together will help Fin accept that he’s gay, too? If so, maybe Lennon has a shot at winning the heart of the boy of his dreams.
“A Hard Day’s Night” is an amusing young adult contemporary romance about two boys who seek to discover if they must fulfill stereotypes to be together.
In the end, maybe all you need is love.

Excerpt:
“Fin and I have managed to get locked into what I will refer to as a repetitive pattern of affable behavior, and, in my opinion, it’s working out splendidly. We are the dearest of friends.”
Scratch that. Starting over.
And since I know it’s well past time for some brutally honest self-talk, I sit up in my bed, and by the warm glow of my Yellow Submarine nightlight, study my frayed picture of John Lennon. To complete the visual, it’s the photo from Mom’s retro record set, The White Album, that I pinned to the wall beside my bed and have worshipped regularly since I was in the seventh grade. Behind those round wire glasses, the man’s piercing eyes don’t lie—John was a brutally honest sort, often to his detriment. After all, back in 1966 didn’t he assert that The Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ? Now, that is certainly calling it exactly as he sees it.
Not that I necessarily agree with the sentiment, I respect that kind of direct- ness in a person.
I owe him this much.
Out of respect for John, I revise and reissue my previous assertion.
“The Finster and I are stuck in a rut of pleasant compatibility... an unusually
deep rut, at that.”
This attempt at telling-it-like-it-is is definitely an improvement, but it’s still
not right on the money, and I’m nothing, if not specific.
I prop up my pillow and lean hard against the creaky antique headboard (call it like you see it, Lennon—the headboard is just plain old), with the certain knowledge that I’ve completely outgrown this flimsy, twin size bed of my childhood.
So maybe it’s more like this....
“Fin and I each have one leg semi-submerged in a muddy ditch, and we’re in it well past our knees. This is the kind of murky and dark, seemingly bottomless, pit that will suck the rubber boot right off your foot with a single, hollow, slurping sound, and then belch with satisfaction.” For the third time I speak aloud in an effort to make my declaration official. “It appears that the two of us are gonna be stuck here in this mucky BFF-swampland for the long haul— bootless and slowly sinking into the sludge—unless, of course, I act decisively and with haste. And with great vigor—because, to accomplish the task I have in mind, I’m most likely going to have to shift into full-hyper-dunk-mode, possibly coupled with the drama-queen-approach. Neither of which poses a problem for me, other than that they require an excessive expenditure of energy.”
That was most definitely a mouthful, but an accurate mouthful.
And all I need is one day. Just one gay day.
Thankfully, ever proud of the open-mindedness he hides so well from his ultra-conservative family, Fin has granted me my greatest wish. On Saturday, March 21st, Beaumont Finley Danforth II (IMHO this BFD is a Big Fucking Deal) is mine for the day to do with as I please. I sincerely hope that a single day is sufficient to help Fin figure out what I already know.
Um, Lennon...maybe now is not the right time to start suffering with a debilitating bout of self-doubt.
Confidence is of key importance in this endeavor.
No, I do not have any worries, and yes, I do have twenty-four feminine-side-ex- ploring, team-switching, relationship-igniting hours to make my homeboy see the rainbow-hued light. Starting bright and early tomorrow morning.
On that note, I’ll get started with my beauty sleep. I sure hope I’m gonna need it.
I wiggle down so I’m flat on my back with my feet sticking six inches over the end of the bed, pull the covers up to my chin, and listen to my mental arrangement of “Imagine” until I fall asleep.

About the author:
Mia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—all named after saints—and five nonpedigreed cats—all named after the next best thing to saints, Boston Red Sox players. Her husband of twenty-two years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about that, as it is a sensitive subject.
Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of troubled young people and their relationships, and she believes that physical intimacy has a place in a love story, but not until it is firmly established as a love story. As a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with romantic tales of tortured heroes (most of whom happened to strongly resemble lead vocalists of 1980s big-hair bands) and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. She is thankful to Dreamspinner Press, Harmony Ink Press, and CreateSpace for providing her with alternate places to stash her stories.
Mia is a social liberal and cheers for each and every victory made in the name of human rights, especially marital equality. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology.

Beckett works at a coffee shop to make ends meet while attending a prestigious university. It's not the most exciting job, but he's done it long enough he's good at it—and can avoid the tedium by spinning sexy little daydreams of things he doubts will ever happen.

Daydreams that soon include Simon, the hot, handsome, and older freelance writer who stops in one day. But then Simon becomes a regular, a bright spot more interesting than the inside of Beckett's head, and daydreams start to seem like they could be something far more tangible—if reality doesn't get in the way first.

Excerpt:

Beckett did not know the older man’s name, and it didn’t matter. When their bodies met, a hot rush swept over Beckett, his breath catching in his throat. The other man took a step into him, leaving Beckett pressed against the wall. The man leaned in, taking a deep inhale. His rough cheek brushed against Beckett’s stubble, and he pulled back until their lips met.
Beckett lifted his hands, reaching into the man’s soft, graying hair. Clothing had dissolved from their bodies, nothing left to impede. Their arms moved over one another, fingers smoothing along taut muscles and hard lines, Beckett’s olive-toned skin complementing the older man’s deep tan in their tangle.
His lips laid a hot trail of kisses against Beckett’s neck and a low growl rumbled in his chest. Large hands closed around Beckett’s shoulders and turned him around. Beckett’s heart pounded in his ears, anticipation and lust building. The man was rough and strong—knowing what he wanted and what Beckett needed. Then, the nameless man spoke for the first time during their interlude,
“Was my pump sugar-free?”
Beckett startled, blinking a few times.
“What?”
“That syrup you just put in my drink—was it sugar-free? Because that’s what I ordered.”
The harsh mechanical whirl of a blender and the hiss of blow-off steam from an espresso machine brought Beckett back into reality. His handsome stranger had vanished, and in his place was the puffy, pale face of an average guy in his thirties. He was wearing an accusing scowl underneath matte black hair and a salt-rimmed baseball cap.
Beckett took a deep breath, the acrid scent of coffee pushing the last vestiges of his imagined lover out of his mind. He strained to give the customer a pleasant smile.
“Yep. Three pumps, one sugar-free vanilla and two hazelnut—just like it says on the cup.”
Puffy-scowl walked away and didn’t say thanks. Beckett disliked being questioned and prickled further when it was shot from over the coffee bar partition. He took pride in his job as a barista at The Percolation Station. He had been working at the eclectic, industrial-style coffee house since he was a freshman at UC Berkeley. After graduating last week, the four years of pulling espresso shots meant he could make these drinks in his sleep. Sometimes, he did—he always felt ripped-off waking up from a night of those pointless, dull dreams.
An errant thought about adding a pump of simple syrup to the guy’s drink skipped through his mind. Beckett never did understand why people risked being rude to those handling what was about to go into their body.
“Beck, can you cover? I got my fifteen,” Regina, the young woman working the cash register, said. She’d been employed at The Perc’ for a couple of months now. She effervesced without the help of a quad shot latte and was a fun energy to work with. He’d even let her give him a nickname, which was something he never did.
Their shift manager, Jordy, emerged from the back to take over drink making and Beckett signed on the register. He squared his shoulders and mustered his people skills—no more time for pleasant daydreams.
The usual late morning crowd wasn’t a bad group, as far as coffee house patrons went. No one was in a panic to get to work or school or whatever gave them that universal frenzied look between six and eight in the morning. In fact, things were going so smoothly, he didn’t call Regina out when she slipped behind the coffee bar instead of reclaiming the register.
Beckett ran out of quarters with his last customer, so he got a fresh roll and smacked the paper tube onto the edge of the drawer to break it. Not looking up, he told the next customer he’d be right with them. It didn’t matter though; he could hear the customer talking on his cellphone.
Fine, he thought, if this guy isn’t ready to order, I’m going to restock my drawer. There’s no line, anyway. Beckett took his time refilling each change slot and straightening the large bills, tuning in on the customer’s conversation.
“I’m glad to hear from you, too. Yeah, I’ll bring something. Just take it easy today, okay? I’ll be there soon.” Beckett glanced up, hearing a smile in the man’s voice. “Mm-hm. Of course. Love you,” the man said before hanging up.
Beckett noticed he was wearing a good-looking jacket—olive plaid tweed, fit for a professor at an ivy league. The man inside the tweed was even more impressive, and while he flipped through his smartphone, Beckett looked him over.
The man was older, but not ‘old’, maybe teasing into middle age. His ashen hair had some silvering at his temples and peppering the stubble on his chin. His skin was a light tan that looked natural and not procured by UV lights. Tall and well built, Beckett found his total image attractive—elegant and masculine.

Beckett, a College student is a barista at a local coffee house. All his naughty daydreams are filled with one of his regular customers, writer, Simon. Simon is older and just getting out of a relationship. Beckett and Simon become friends, but will it move beyond that point?

I enjoyed this story. It was sweet. The flow was good and it held me captivated from the first sentence. Both Beckett and Simon are extremely likable characters. The secondary characters were well developed and added nicely to the story.

A.V. asked me to read this to be sure she had the New Orleans dialect correct, and she did a good job. I only corrected a phrase or two. I may not use all the phrases in this story, but I know people who do! lol

This was and enjoyable read. Sit back, have some coffee, maybe some beignets and enjoy Beckett and Simon's story!

Author Interview:

A.V., welcome to the Krewe of Bayou Book Junkie. Thanks so much for being here today!
Thank you so much for hosting me during this blog tour Mardi Gras parade! I’m super excited to be here!
What inspired this story?
Well, I have a strong pull toward May/December gay relationships. Weaving in New Orleans and the San Francisco Bay Area, places I love, made me happy. Like many other writers, I’ve spent more than a few afternoons in coffee shops working, and it seemed like a nice place for a fictional romance to blossom, so I made Simon a freelance writer. I decided to put a lot of my favorite things in “Percolation, Poetry, and Passion”: the places, the stars, and personal values. So, I guess you could say, it really is a story from my own heart.
What are your favorite qualities about each of these two main characters?
My favorite quality about Beckett is his principles and convictions. He is an environmentalist and a hard worker, and I really admire that about him. My favorite quality about Simon is his heart of gold. He is caring and loving, and I know he will do whatever he can to make sure the man he loves is alright.
Do any of your friends or family members ever end up between the pages of your books?
Ha, ha! I can whole-heartedly say “NO!” Simply because, I hate the question, “is that [this or that real person]?” about any of my characters. They are all works of pure fiction. Of course, little bits here and there come from real experiences, they have to. For example, in this story, I did use a name from my distant past: ‘Regina’, a secondary character in the story, is the name of a schoolmate from my childhood.
Can you share the projects you are currently working on?
Absolutely. I am waiting, impatiently, to see if another contemporary gay romance short of mine has made it into a Christmas anthology. If not, I have some fun plans for it with another author friend for a sort of free “Christmas Gift” to our readers. My current active WIP is a science-fiction series I’ve been writing off and on for several years. It’s sort of my baby, and I want to make sure I put down a good foundation for these characters and the series. It also features a gay couple as two of the three central protagonists.
A night out on the town or a night cuddling in front of the T.V.?
Definitely a night in. I love the idea of going out, but when we actually do make plans, I always dread them by the time they roll around!
Now let's talk a bit about mine, and Beckett's home town, New Orleans! Boy it's stifling here today isn't it? I'm glad they have fans here in the cafe.
Whew, me too! I’m not used to all of this heat and humidity. But I guess that’s what makes all these beautiful trees and moss and bayous around here. My favorite are all the little ferns sprouting from the plaster on the buildings here!
What's your favorite place to visit here?
Oh, the whole French Quarter. It’s just beautiful—magical, really. I don’t see how anyone could walk down these streets and not fall in love with crack and cobble.
What's your favorite food here?
Can I only pick just one? Oh my goodness. I think I need to make a list: bread pudding, creamy pralines, jambalaya, beignets, French bread. The fact some that restaurants serve you a sleeve of fresh, soft, crusty French bread…let’s just say they have a special place with me.
What's your favorite drink here?
Oh, I had a lot of fun trying the drinks in New Orleans, everything from the cheap Hurricanes on Bourbon street (only $5.00, and they were like sunshine in a go-cup) to the frozen daiquiris galore. I also liked learning about the Pimm’s Cup and my husband’s favorite drink since we visited two years ago is the Sazerac. We’ve spent a lot of time scouring Bay Area liquor stores for authentic rye whiskey.
What's the most memorable event you've had while visiting the Big Easy?
I got incredibly lucky and was able to visit New Orleans for my thirtieth birthday. And I went to see one specific holiday and event, my very favorite one: Halloween. It was amazing, I got to see a Mardi Gras-style Halloween Parade, put on by the Krewe of Boo, and had an experience I will remember for the rest of my life. We both had elaborate costumes (as did a lot of people) and were stopped for pictures. Someone even tried to give us a dollar!

What do you love about the culture and vibe here?
It will be hard to put into words everything I love about New Orleans. It truly has a different feeling than anywhere else I’ve visited in the country. The dedication to beauty, color, music, and life is unlike anything I’ve felt before. I think the age of the city is also something special. On the west coast, we just don’t have the same depth in history—New Orleans has been being beautiful for a long, long time. I hope to come back again someday.
