Release Day Review ~ The Fireman's Pole by Sue Brown

Title: The Fireman's Pole

Author: Sue Brown

Release Date: October 15, 2017
Category: Contemporary, Dreamspun Desires
Pages: 220

Dreamspinner  Amazon

The flames of passion rise for the lord of the manor.
It’s springtime in Calminster village, but things are already heating up. Sexy firefighter Dale Maloney is new to the local station. When Dale backs the company fire engine into the village maypole, he attracts the ire—and attention—of Benedict Raleigh, the Baron Calminster.
Soon after meeting Dale, Ben breaks off his relationship with his girlfriend, and the sparks between Ben and Dale are quickly fanned into flames.
Unfortunately the passion between the two men isn’t the only blaze in the village. An arsonist’s crimes are escalating, and it’s up to Dale and his crew to stop them. Meanwhile, as they investigate, an unscrupulous business partner attempts to coerce Ben into marrying his daughter. The May Day parade is around the corner, but they have plenty of fires to put out before Ben can finally slide down the fireman’s pole.

*Copy provided to Bayou Book Junkie by Dreamspinner Press for my reading pleasure in hopes of an unbiased opinion, a review was not a requirement.*

After a secretive break-up with his fellow firefighter, Dale takes the first job available somewhere away from his ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend. Dale ends up in small-town Calminster. But after some mistakes, Dale has not made a good impression on the Baron of Calminster. The two clash from the first meeting, but as they see each other more, they can no longer deny the attraction.

Both characters took a little time to like. Dale was easier but he was so awkward. His first week on the job was awkward and I felt so bad for him. Ben really seemed like quite the a-hole and took a lot longer for me to like. Once getting to know him, his behavior made sense and he turned out to be a caring, down-to-earth man. Dale and Ben were a sweet couple and I enjoyed watching them find love.

There was a little mystery in the story and I would have loved more of it. It was a very small part of the story and did not overtake the love story taking place. Other than the arsonist, Calminster seemed a great place to live. I actually didn’t read the blurb for this book but the title of the book gave me a laugh and I couldn’t pass it up. And I was not disappointed in the story! This was a sweet romance with more of a HFN ending but you can definitely draw the conclusion that Ben and Dale got their HEA.

Jake Tyler walked out of Special Ops two years ago, a devastated, broken man after he discovered his sister brutally murdered by her husband, Riley. Since then he’s found a kind of peace running a rural bar. The last thing Jake Tyler expects is his former team to turn up with grim news. Jake’s ex-brother-in-law has escaped from prison and is heading Jake’s way. The team is here to protect Jake, whether he likes it or not – a decision reluctantly shared by their leader, Jake’s ex-lover Mitch Mitchelson.

Mitch is angry and hurting. The man he trusted – the man he adored more than anything – abandoned both his team and Mitch. Jake never gave Mitch a chance to help or come to terms with his desertion. Regardless of mission protocols, Mitch isn’t about to open his heart again to that kind of pain.

But the strong attraction between them can’t be denied. How are they ever going to work together when Mitch still resents Jake’s disappearance, and to Jake, the team represents everything that destroyed him in the first place? And meantime they wait for Riley to find them... and to settle the threat once and for all.

Excerpt
Nick was breathing hard, sweat beading across his forehead. “Do you think you could help me get to the door?”
It had probably cost Nick a fair amount of pride just to ask, and Logan said, “Sure. Hold on to me.”
“Thanks. It’s the one with all the gnomes. Say a word—”
“I wouldn’t dream of it,” Logan said cheerfully. They made their way slowly up the path. Logan looked at the brightly colored gnomes.
“Which one is you?”
“I’m going to end you,” Nick muttered.
Logan had only said it as a joke, but it was too good to pass up. “One of them is you. Come on, tell me.” “The fisherman by the pond.”
“Makes sense.”
“Nothing about gnomes makes sense. I bought the fisherman as a joke present to my mum, but she liked it.” Nick sounded disgusted. “Next thing I know, we’ve got a garden full of the buggers.”
“So it was your fault?”
“Yep, and she’ll never let me forget it.”
The front door flew open, revealing a dark-haired, middle-aged woman in jeans and a T-shirt—presumably Nick’s mum and the lover of all things gnomish. “Nick, what’ve you done now? I told you not to go running!”
Nick growled under his breath. “I’m okay. Just twisted my ankle and fell.”
“You fell on your bad hip?” She flung up her arms in exasperation. “Jesus Christ, Son, you must have fallen on your head and lost the brains you were born with. Do you need to go to A&E?”
“I’m fine, Mum,” Nick said, and Logan grinned at the whine in his tone. Nick’s mum huffed, but she stood to one side.
“Bring him in here, young man.” Logan had intended to deposit Nick on the doorstep, but her tone suggested he’d better obey… or else.

Logan has been hiding in his cottage at the Isle of Wight for four months after a traumatic event at his practice in London left him suffering from PTSD, but when he finds Nick on the beach after he forced himself to collapse, they forge a friendship heavily laced with attraction, that might just be what they both need.

I loved both Logan and Nick. Their chemistry and the easy way in which they both fit in each other lives was just amazing, but what was truly outstanding was their banter, I couldn't get enough of that!

While this is my first book in this 'verse, so to speak, Ms. Brown gave enough information and backstory regarding the rest of the characters in both series that appear in this book and rather than feeling lost, I'm so going to be tracking the rest of the books and catching up with them as soon as possible as I found myself really intrigued by them all.

All in all, a fabulous, very enjoyable read, full of emotions, humor and enough angst and suspense to keep things very interesting, with a fantastic array of characters, both main and supporting, that made this into one hell of a book!

Highly recommendable!

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT

Maybe that was a mistake, because Heather’s eyes widened. “You went on a date?”

“Go away,” he said. “I have notes to write and patients to see.”

“You don’t have to see anyone yet, and you haven’t answered the question.”

“It wasn’t a date. There were six other people there, and Cameron was just being a friend to me.”

“My friends don’t stick their tongue down my throat,” she said.

“I… he… go away!”

“He did! You kissed!”

Jeff growled as he realized she’d just played him. “I hate you.”

“No, you don’t, because I’m the one who has your back.”
