Synopsis

Shannon hates Christmas. Mostly because Christmas hates him. It sure seems like it, anyway: every crummy thing that’s happened to him since high school has befallen him at the Most Wonderful Time of the Year. Every humiliating break-up, every high-rise hotel fire—heck, a few years back, one guy he had the hots for up and died. Which goes a long way toward explaining why he’s a whimpering mess when he meets Ben the barista one Christmas morning at his neighborhood coffee house. It doesn’t completely excuse his using Ben’s T-shirt as a handkerchief—while Ben’s still in it—but Ben’s nothing if not a good sport. Ben’s such a bright spot that after a while Shannon wonders if maybe his Christmas Curse hasn’t been lifted. And what better place to test this theory than at Ben’s family festivities? It’s not like Christmas is actually cursed.

Is it?

“Where do y’all live?” Cecilia asked once they were settled in the shade of a huge tree and had toasted Endless Love.
“Denver.”
“Serious? So what, you’re in town for Pride?”
“No,” Clark said. “We’re flight attendants. We’re on a layover. We were actually supposed to be working today, but San Fran-Denver canceled.”
“So you got married instead?”
“You think you’re surprised,” Tanner said with a grin.
“I think that’s adorable,” Tess said. “How long have you guys been together?”
Tanner smiled at Clark, then pulled his phone out of his pocket to check the time. “What’s it been, babe? An hour and a half?”
“Already?” Clark said. “Time does fly.”
Cecilia made a show of setting her glass down with a thunk. “Wait. You guys aren’t a couple?”
“Well, we are now.”
“We’re friends,” Clark hastened to add. “And you know, we’ve fooled around.” He reached for Tanner’s hand. “I’ve been wanting to be a couple.”
Tanner smiled. “A little bit I have, too.”
“Really?” Clark asked, visibly pleased by this revelation, as if Tanner hadn’t just legally hitched his wagon to Clark’s star like an hour ago.
“Really.”
Both girls were gobsmacked, but Tess soon said, “Well, you got that wish.”
Cecilia pursued the theme. “But you weren’t, like, boyfriends or anything?”
The hand-holding husbands shook their heads. Nope.
“Hadn’t even talked about it?”
Nope.
“And you married each other because…?”
“Well, you guys seemed to think it was a good idea,” Tanner said with a smile.

Mari's Review:

*** ARC provided to Bayou Book Junkie in exchange for a fair and honest review. ***

Tanner and Clark are coworkers and occasionally they make out when they are drunk, they end up paired together on a layover flight to San Francisco the day the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage and after getting caught up in the moment, they end up marrying each other. They are both willing to make it work, but there are some things that might not be too easy to overcome.

I enjoyed the story for the most part. The way Tanner and Clark got married was a bit too, well, flighty, but it worked out well for them. Both Tanner and Clark are fairly likable and were willing to put up an effort to make things work despite the rush with which they married. It was fairly obvious from the start that Clark had a big crush on Tanner, and it was nice seeing that Tanner wasn't as indifferent to Clark as he appeared at first, and then to see that grow into something stronger and deeper was nothing short of awesome.

The story was short, sweet and fun, with some angst thrown in for good measure. Very enjoyable!

First Flight Out
Jesse Cisneros and his best buddy Tanner fly for Mile High Airlines, which is every bit as classy as it sounds. When Dr. Willis rings his call light on a flight from New York to Denver, Jesse is so taken with the good doctor’s looks and charm, he forgets all about the inflight medical crisis that prompted him to call for a flight attendant in the first place. Willis is handsome. Willis is helpful. And wouldn’t you know it? Willis is someone else’s husband.

Jesse can hardly believe his luck when their paths cross again on the patio of a popular gay bar. It’s been nine months, and Willis has been busy: now he’s single, he’s out, and he’s very interested in getting to know Jesse better. It all seems too good to be true! And you know what they say about that ...

And so they talked about acting. They talked about television. They talked about movie stars of old, and about how many of them you’d see if you watched The Love Boat on DVD.
“I mean, it wasn’t just Ted Knight and Charo on every episode,” Felix said. “I’m talking about Oscar winners. Olivia DeHavilland and Joan Fontaine, for Heaven’s sake! One day you’re in Gone With the Wind, the next you’re playing Captain Stubing’s Great Aunt Fanny? I wish they’d reboot that show. I’d have someplace to go when I’m yesterday’s news. I could find love with the lounge act, surprise them all: Grampa’s still got it!”
Shep laughed. “Maybe you could spearhead a revival. It can’t be that hard. All you need is a stowaway, a jewel thief, and a case of mistaken identity for each episode.”
“Sounds like you know your Love Boat,” Felix said admiringly. “Maybe that can be your Hollywood dream.”
“Okay, you really want to know my Hollywood dream?” Shep asked.
“I do.”
“More champagne, that’s my Hollywood dream.” He signaled their waiter, and just like that, it came true.
They cracked each other up brainstorming through ever-more elaborate Love Boat plots:
“Naturally, her father doesn’t approve because he’s not the right sort….”
“What he doesn’t approve of is how short his shorts are….”
“I see Raven-Symone as the former Broadway star whose agent books her on the cruise but forgets to tell her it’s unpaid.”
“So she has to cocktail to pay her fare, and Isaac falls in love with her.”
“This shit writes itself.”
Eventually they fell quiet, although they continued to gaze, tittering, into each other’s eyes. Felix reached across the table and took Shep’s hand. “I had a great time last night, Sheppy.”
“Me too,” Shep said with a laugh. He’d lost the battle where the sobriquet ‘Sheppy’ was concerned, although it had eventually been made clear to the rest of The Boyz (and Frieda) at the Clarion that it would only be tolerated when it issued from Felix, and then only with an unwavering eye roll.
“I think I might kinda like you.”
“Forget The New Love Boat,” Shep said. “Your true calling is obviously epic love poetry. Or at least romantic greeting cards.”
“Don’t mock me when I’ve had mimosas.”

Tracy's Review:

4 Stars

**This book was provided to me from the Author/Publisher via EyesOnBooks in exchange for an honest review**

Say Cheese stars Shep and Felix and is told mostly from Shep's POV. The story starts in New Orleans (Kenner technically) after a short visit to his hometown to see friends and family he tries to get back home to L.A., where Felix has big plans for them.

As Shep recieves picture messages from Felix throughout the trip back home he reminisces about some of he and Felix's important events they have shared together, thoughout their relationship such as first kiss, first time sleeping together, etc... Shep ends up stranded through a series of misfortunate events, that are just hilarious.

This was a short sweet and funny read. I enjoyed the authors writing style, and I really would have loved a full length novel, of Felix and Shep. I will be looking at more from this author in the future!
