Blog Tour: Blood Bathory: Absence of the Sun by Ari McKay (Guest Post + Giveaway)

Hello everyone! Thank you for joining us here today, and thanks to the lovely folks at Bayou Book Junkie for hosting us! We’re here to promote our latest release, Blood Bathory: Absence of the Sun, The Guardians of Gaia Book Two, and we’ve brought you an exclusive excerpt. We hope you enjoy it!!!

“Well, well, fresh faces. And rather lovely ones.”

Tall, black haired and pale skinned, the newcomer was slender almost to the point of emaciation and attired in an outfit that looked like something out of a Victorian melodrama. His black velvet frock coat was closely tailored, and the white ruffles at his throat somehow didn’t make his skin seem any more colorful in comparison. As if that didn’t make it obvious he was a vampire, the smile he offered showed a hint of fangs.

He looked at Tyr, his dark eyes taking on a hungry gleam. Drawing in a deliberate sniff, he licked his lips. “You, my pet, smell heavenly. I could just eat you up.”

Tyr withdrew as far as he could from the vampire and shook his head. Until recently, he’d only fought vampires, never been seduced by one, and he wasn’t interested in being seduced by this one. “I’m with him,” he said, making a show of resting his hand on Adam’s thigh.

Adam growled again. “That’s right, he’s with me.” Adam put an arm around Tyr’s shoulders, tilting his chin up and staring at the vampire piercingly. “Go poach elsewhere.”

“With you? Interesting... I don’t sense any marks.” Never losing his smile, the vampire stepped closer. “It doesn’t seem to me that you’ve claimed him. It would amuse me to lure him away from you.”

“He leaves his marks where only he can see them.” Tyr stared defiantly at the vampire, although he was careful to keep his gaze fixed on the vampire’s chin in case the vampire tried to mesmerize him. “I won’t leave him.”

“Hmmm... you’re lying, pretty one.” The vampire’s voice became low and almost hypnotic. “You would be better off with me. I treat my dolls very well, if they please me.”

Adam’s hand suddenly covered the one of Tyr’s that rested on his leg, and he lifted it up, his thumb stroking the inside of Tyr’s wrist. “You’d better leave. Now.”

The brush of Adam’s thumb against his bare skin made Tyr’s body tighten in response. It had been so long since he’d been touched like that, and his skin woke up and cried up for more. Part of him was assailed by guilt at responding to someone who wasn’t Aaron, but there was a tiny voice in the back of his mind reminding him that he still had needs.

“I’m his,” he said huskily, and even though this was an act, something in him stirred and responded as soon as he said the words.

The Guardians of Gaia Series

Blood Bathory: Like The Night (Book #1) Amazon US | Amazon UK

Blurb

Tyger tyger, burning bright…

As theriomorphs in the service of Gaia, Tyr Gustavson and his lover Aaron fought against the vampires aiding the Third Reich during WWII. But even the fierceness of Tyr’s tiger form couldn’t save Aaron from being torn apart when a mission went horribly wrong. Lost in his pain, Tyr remained feral until he was unwillingly recalled to Gaia’s service seventy years later.

In the forests of the night...

When fighter pilot Adam Carson’s plane was shot down, he thought the worst that could happen was being sent to a Nazi prison camp. Little did he know there were other monsters in the shadows, and one of them wanted to claim him. But refusing Elizabeth Bathory had a price. Adam was turned against his will and trapped in a coffin as punishment for his resistance.

What immortal hand or eye…

While hunting ghouls, Tyr and his colleagues discover Adam’s prison. Believing he could be an asset, Marielle Du Lac frees him. Adam joins the team and is drawn to Tyr, despite Tyr’s hatred of vampires. When Tyr rejects Adam out of fear, Adam accepts a suicidal mission to find Thrace, the original nosferatu. If their desperate plan works, the theriomorphs could destroy not only Elizabeth, but the sire of all vampires as well. But if it fails, they could unleash a force leading to the destruction of them all… and perhaps of Gaia herself.

Blog Tour: Forged In Fire by Ari McKay (Giveaway)

Hi, everyone! We’d like to thank the Bayou Book Junkies for having us on the blog today. I’m Ari of the writing duo known as Ari McKay, and I’m here to talk a little bit about our new release, Forged in Fire, which is book two in the Asheville Arcana series.

McKay and I LOVE writing series, especially when it comes to paranormal stories. So much time is spent constructing a world for a paranormal story that it seems wasteful to make all that effort only to use it once and throw it away. And we really do spend time on our paranormals, more than on any other type of book. McKay and I both played Dungeons and Dragons for many years, and so we have definite rules to our worlds, and we have to stick to them!

For instance, in the Asheville Arcana universe, we have mages (who specialize in a dedicated branch of magic), witches (who are more about charms, enchantments, and potions), elves, wee folk, vampires, shapeshifters of all different types, as well as demons and angels. In Forged in Fire, we introduce a different creature, a cursed one who was bitten by a possessed wolf shifter and has been turned into something akin to a standard horror genre werewolf. He doesn’t have the advantage of the shifters, because he can’t do it at will, only on the full moon or when driven by rage.

We spent a lot of time setting up the rules for how magic works, what magical creatures can and can’t do, and the reasons why they don’t interact much with regular humans. It was only after when spent quite a long time discussing the structure of our magical world that we were able to get down to plotting. And what a plot it is! It was almost too big for us to tell it in only three books, but we recently submitted the third, which should be out sometime before the end of the year!

As far as Forged in Fire… this is the story of Whimsy Hickes, a mage we introduced in the first book, Out of the Ashes. Whimsy is an easy going guy, and while he’s enjoyed being friends with benefits with Arden and Julian over the years, he really yearns for more. He’s ready to stop playing the field and settle down with a man he can love and care for, someone who wants a long term commitment. When he meets Harlan Edgewood, a lycanthrope, he’s immediately attracted, but Harlan… well, he has some issues related to his condition, and he doesn’t think Whimsy should get involved with someone like him. Then things get dicey when the possessed shifters return to the Asheville area, and Harlan’s very soul is in jeopardy. Whimsy will have to put everything on the line, and use all his magic to save Harlan -- because if he can’t, he might not only lose Harlan, but everyone he’s ever loved.

Excerpt:

Mason shook his head. "I wasn't paranoid enough," he said. "You were. You knew it could get bad. I didn't believe it -- didn't want to believe it. It almost killed me."

"I did not want to believe it either. I hoped I was wrong, but my instincts were telling me something bad was going to happen. Now that it has--" Ezra's voice broke, and he brought Mason's hand to his cheek, clinging tightly. "I cannot be objective. When I saw you there, saw all that blood..." He shook his head, and Mason thought he saw the glimmer of tears in Ezra's eyes before Ezra looked away. "I cannot be merely an employee. I tried. If you want me to recuse myself, I will."

"What?" Mason was confused, but he could see Ezra's pain, and he reached over with his free hand, touching Ezra's cheek. "Are you saying you want to leave Jamie and me?"

"No!" Ezra stared at Mason, wide-eyed. "No, I don't want to leave. But if you want me to remain only your employee, I cannot do that any longer. I tried to maintain my professional distance, especially after I overstepped so badly, but I cannot do it after this."
