Synopsis:

Mateo was raised to be Alpha of his pack. Taught how to lead, learned about mates, and when he was old enough, given the freedom to make changes he saw fit. The one thing he never imagined, was that his mate would be a man.

Brick has known that Mateo was the one for him since he’d watched Mateo start dating his sister in high school. Younger than the Alpha, Brick always assumed Mateo would realize they were mates and come out to the pack, he left for college to give him time, but nothing has changed. Mateo is still living life with blinders on, but when Brick is involved in a horrible accident, will Mateo finally realize his true feelings?

The Alpha’s Forbidden Mate is the third in an all new series about men who may not be brothers by blood, but are brothers of the heart. And the realization that, regardless of how the Matthews siblings have been raised, sometimes you have to follow your heart, even if it's leading you down the hardest path.

This is a M/M novella.

3.5 Stars

The Alpha's Forbidden Mate is book 3 in the Brothers of the Heart series, while I think it can be read as a standalone, I think it might be more enjoyable if read in order, as the couples featured in the previous books appear prominently in this one.

When I asked to review this book, I did it because I was intrigued by the blurb and I fell in love with the cover, which is gorgeous!

Unfortunately, the book didn't quite met my expectations. I don't really enjoy being 'told' every single thing that is happening, I prefer to be shown and let my imagination fill in the blanks. This happened mostly during the first half while the author was giving us background information concerning the major players. The second half was much better, since there was more action and I actually felt I got to know the characters then.

While I liked Brick, I wasn't too sure about Mateo for most of the story. I truly wanted to slap some sense into him so many times, I was apalled at the way he treated Brick during the first portion of the book and then angry that Brick would just take him back just because Mateo was his mate, like he didn't treat him so poorly. And maybe because of this, I failed to feel any chemistry between them.

Overall, the book is well-written, but it definitely wasn't for me. While I definitely enjoyed the second half of the book much better than the first, I just found it difficult to connect with Brick and Mateo and be invested in their HEA. However, that doesn't mean that others might not enjoy the book, especially if they've already read the first two books in the series, so take my review with a grain of salt.

3.5 Stars!

What I Loved: Firstly let me just say how much I love this cover. It’s simple yet beautiful. It’s artistic with an almost elegant feel to it Not at all the typical hard sculpted set of abs displayed behind a wolf or two that we see time and time again (not that I don’t love me a set of nice abs). I think it really stands out and I love it.

I love that an author who as far as I know generally writes MF attempted to try and do something different and decided to feature a same-sex couple.

What I Liked: I enjoyed Logan a lot. I don’t read a lot about Bear Shifters but I found his character endearing. I’m very tempted to pick up a few bear Shifter stories now.

What I Didn’t Like: So it seems that this is the third book in a series and I had no clue. It’s possible I may have enjoyed the overall story more had I read both Alpha at Home or Right Girl, Wrong Alpha but I’m not sure. There were quite a few characters that I had to try to keep straight and without knowing them previously, I felt I was missing something vital. Max is Mateo’s Bravo, this is something I found completely confusing because it was unfamiliar to me. I know of Alpha, Beta, Omega even Gamma or Delta. I’ve run across Pack enforcers or Second. However, Bravo was new and unexplained to me.

I felt very little connection to Brick or Mateo and had a hard time seeing any chemistry between the two men. Mates should have a spark or passion that ignites, an undeniable pull towards one another. That’s not something that we can just be told about, I want to be shown, I want to feel it. These men didn’t do that for me.

Overall, this was a interesting story with a good amount of angst and soul-searching. I enjoy Shifter mate stories where the couple faces obstacles before they can truly get their HEA but something just felt missing. Either way, though, this one was an ok read for me but not a book I loved. I’d recommend it to fans of the series but if you are new to the Brothers of the Heart Series I would suggest reading the first two books first.
