Virtual Book Tour ~ Tribute Act (Porthkennack series #8) by Joanna Chambers (Guest Post + Giveaway)

Hello, book lovers! I’m Joanna Chambers and this is the blog tour for Tribute Act, my new romance which is book #8 in the Riptide's Cornwall-set Porthkennack series. I’ll be sharing thoughts on writing my first full length contemporary, writing Christmas songs as an extreme form of authorly procrastination and my love of men with sad eyes. Please join me for a chance to win a copy of the book and a $25 Riptide gift card!

The Christmas season might be well and truly over but it comes up again in my January release, Tribute Act. The book features a Christmas song, the lyrics of which are peppered throughout the story, and which is ultimately performed by Mack, one of the heroes, in a climactic scene.
I seem to be driven to be write about the festive season. As well as publishing a number of explicitly Christmas-themed stories over the last few years, Christmas features significantly in several of my other books. So, what's the big draw?
Well, for a writer, there’s a lot to go at. First, you’ve got the ancient midwinter festival traditions (Saturnalia, Lord of Misrule) that turn the natural order on its head, enabling things to be said and done that wouldn’t normally happen. Then you’ve got the contrast of the traditional moral values Christmas is supposed to represent with the vast consumerism of modern day Christmases. Then you’ve got the family aspect—Christmas is a brilliant setting against which to explore what a family really is—some of my favourite Christmas stories are about found families. But more than any of that, I think there is a sort of mood around the holiday setting—in the pause—that naturally leads to self-reflection. It’s a time at which the world is briefly suspended, and a character might look at their life a little closer, find redemption, make a long-overdue apology, or maybe tell someone they love them.
What’s your favourite Christmas story?

About Tribute Act

Nathan Bridges hadn’t intended to settle down in his hometown of Porthkennack—he just ended up staying after saving the family business from ruin. The truth is, Nathan can’t stop himself from stepping in when problems arise. He’s a fixer, the man everyone turns to. But even fixers can’t solve everything.

When Nathan’s sister needs an organ transplant, it’s his stepbrother, Mack, who the family turns to as Rosie’s only potential living donor. Nathan’s curiosity about the stepbrother he’s never met turns to shock when he realises that Mack is his latest—and hottest ever—one-night stand.

Nathan and Mack agree to forget their single night together, but that’s easier said than done. When Mack moves in to Nathan’s place to recuperate after surgery, it’s not just the sexual tension between them that keeps growing. Against all the odds, and despite Mack’s wariness of intimacy, the two men grow close enough that Nathan begins to wonder what it would take to mend the rift that’s kept Mack and his father estranged for over a decade . . . and whether Mack might consider staying with Nathan in Porthkennack for good.

About Porthkennack

Welcome to Porthkennack, a charming Cornish seaside town with a long and sometimes sinister history. Legend says King Arthur's Black Knight built the fort on the headland here, and it’s a certainty that the town was founded on the proceeds of smuggling, piracy on the high seas, and the deliberate wrecking of cargo ships on the rocky shore. Nowadays it draws in the tourists with sunshine and surfing, but locals know that the ghosts of its Gothic past are never far below the surface.

This collaborative story world is brought to you by five award-winning, best-selling British LGBTQ romance authors: Alex Beecroft, Joanna Chambers, Charlie Cochrane, Garrett Leigh, and JL Merrow. Follow Porthkennack and its inhabitants through the centuries and through the full rainbow spectrum with historical and contemporary stand-alone titles.

4.5 Stars

Nathan is a fixer, he needs to control things, to help others, but he longs for someone that will take care of him. He's ambivalent of what to think when Mack, his stepbrother, comes to Porthkennack to donate half his liver to their sister. For one part, Mack turns out to be the last man Nathan hooked up with and is very attracted to. For the other, he feels bad that he wasn't able to help their sister himself.

I loved Nathan. He was such a caring, loving man. He was a bit of a control freak, but that was understandable considering how much everyone leaned on him. I wasn't too sure what to make of Mack at first, but the more I learned about him, the more I liked him. The chemistry between Nathan and Mack was electric and the progression of their relationship was very natural. I might have wanted to shake them up a bit at a point of the story, but I just adored them together. They were hot and sweet and really complemented each other's personalities.

I liked Nathan's mom and Rosie, even if I was a bit aggravated that they didn't back up Nathan and Mack a bit more in some instances (I really wanted to scream when Rosie started crying at some point). I wasn't sure what to think of Derek, Mack's father and Nathan stepfather. He seemed like a nice guy, but between how ungrateful he seemed with Nathan after all his help and then how he refused to apologize to Mack, I just wanted to throat punch him.

I really enjoyed this book, it was a great addition to the series, which is one of my favorites. I had read other books by Joanna Chambers, mostly historical, but she did a great job with contemporary as well and I'll be looking forward to reading more in the future.

All in all, Tribute Act was an amazing read, angsty and sweet and hot and entertaining. Very recommendable!

About Joanna Chambers

Joanna Chambers always wanted to write. In between studying, finding a proper grown up job, getting married and having kids, she spent many hours staring at blank sheets of paper and chewing pens. That changed when she rediscovered her love of romance and found her muse. Joanna's muse likes red wine, coffee and won't let Joanna clean the house or watch television.

  7. Thanks for the review. Thank you Joanna for a few thoughts about Christmas. I love reading stories surrounding Christmas where found families are featured. Not everyone has family or are able to be with their families at Christmas.

  10. I don't think I have a story that I would consider a favorite but I do like A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Kindness, generosity & warmth are three great qualities anyone should possess. ^_^

  14. Congrats, Johanna, and thanks for your thoughts about Christmas. I agree that it's laced with all sorts of drama, which my traditional fav, A Christmas Carol, takes advantage of. As for gay contemporary, maybe not a fav, but I just finished and enjoyed Color of You by CS Poe. - Purple Reader,
