For a chance at a future filled with love, he’ll have to face a painful past.
Eric, recently dumped by his boyfriend, is summoned home after his dad suffers a stroke. His family farm in rural Vermont holds memories he’d rather forget, but he—with his degree in agricultural business—is needed to clear up a predicament with the bank. In trying to forget the bad, Eric has also lost sight of the good: green meadows dotted with grass-fed dairy cows and the sugar maples that once produced the area’s finest maple syrup. With Eric’s help, they will again.
A captivating farmhand named Phil tempts Eric to give the countryside another chance, but before they can consider being together, Eric must move past more than his feelings for his ex-boyfriend—he’ll need to stand up to the ghosts that sent him running from the farm in the first place….
States of Love: Stories of romance that span every corner of the United States.

3.5 Stars

Eric is having a really bad day. First, he comes home to find his boyfriend and some strange guy packing up their apartment, so his boyfriend can take the promotion he was offered in New York, without Eric, then he receives a call from his mom informing him his father has had a stroke and he needs to come home to Greenville and help out with the farm. Even with all the bad memories his small hometown holds, Eric loves his parents and can’t say no to them. When he arrives, he meets, or rather, is re-introduced to Phil, whose parents helped run the farm and was also a couple of years ahead of Eric in school. Will Phil help replace those awful high school memories with more pleasant ones?

I liked the premise of the story, but Eric was a complete twat at first. He was rude and mean to Phil for no good reason. I understand that Eric was tormented in high school by bullies, but Phil wasn’t one of them, so his reaction to and treatment of Phil made little sense to me. Phil was sweet and I really liked him.

While I liked the idea of the story, the execution didn’t quite work for me. As I said, Eric’s treatment of Phil was not only uncalled for, but it wasn’t explained as to why he was being a jerk to him.

I thought once they got past the animosity things moved much too fast. I wish the progression of their relationship had been more natural and organic in the beginning and I found the resolution to their disagreement was resolved too quickly.

As for the landscape of Vermont, it was absolutely beautiful and a place I’d definitely like to visit one day. While I felt the relationship was too rushed at first, the story was still enjoyable. Sweet and a bit sexy, set against a lovely backdrop. Recommendable.
