“Hey, gorgeous, want to dance?”
Bobby looked up at the attractive guy who’d been eyeing him for the last hour. “Oh, I don’t know—”
“Come on, Bobby, go. Go!” Rodney pushed Bobby out of the chair.
He smiled, but it took some effort. “Okay, so I guess yes.” He followed the man’s trim ass in nice summer-wool slacks toward the tiny dance floor in the lounge at the Rose. Jerry and his honey, Mick, were already dancing. The two big firefighters took up more than their share of the available boogie space, but they looked so happy it made Bobby tear up.
The guy turned and pulled Bobby into his arms. Clearly he intended to lead. Okay with me. “I’m Aaron, by the way.” The guy had nice hazel eyes and carefully brushed brown hair.
“Bobby.”
He started a not-very-complex box step. “You’re an artist, aren’t you?”
“Yes, how did you know?”
“I saw you at the Sawdust. I really like your stuff. Very unique.”
“Thank you.” Come on, be charming. “What do you do?”
“Stockbroker. Let me know if you need any investment tips.”
Bobby laughed. “Believe me, artists need tips on keeping their rent paid, although I’ll admit, we’re having a good summer.”
“We?”
“Me and my brother. We paint together.”
“Oh. Interesting. Keeping it in the—holy shit!”
Bobby looked up at Aaron and followed his line of sight to the door—where, sure enough, Robin had just walked in. Bobby waggled his fingers and called over the piped-in music. “Hi, dear.”
Robin waved back.
Aaron said, “But you two are identical.”
“Yes, of course. We’re the McMillan twins.”
Bobby felt Aaron react—somewhere between a jerk and a laugh.
“What?” Bobby looked up into a face that had been pleasant and now leered.
“Fuck, why didn’t you tell me you were Double Trouble?”
Bobby frowned. “Was I supposed to?”
“Shit, yes. I mean, what does it take to get some backroom action from you two? Hell, I can pay.”
“Pay?” Bobby pressed his hands against Aaron’s chest and shoved. “Get your hands off me, you pervert.”
“What?”
Bobby turned his tail and flipped it back to the table—but his insides rolled with anger and nausea.
Robin saw his face and sprang up. “What’s wrong? What happened?”
“Nothing I don’t deserve. He saw you and realized we were Double Trouble. He said he’d like to pay us.” Robin clenched his fists, but Bobby put a hand on his arm. “You can’t blame him for getting the wrong idea.”
“Oh? Watch me.” Robin stared pugnaciously across the dance floor.
Over-the-Top Heroes
Hi everyone! I’m so happy to be to share my delight in the release of my new book, Bleu Balls, a brand new novel in the Balls to the Wall series . I’m Tara Lain and I write The Beautiful Boys of Romance. If you’ve read many of my books, you know I have a definite fascination with very flamboyant gay men. That theme began back in my first years as an author when I created the ever popular Rodney Mansfield in Fire Balls, continued apace with Lindsey Vanessen in Wolf in Gucci Loafers and some would say outdid them all in Knight of Ocean Avenue in which Shaz, my celebrity stylist, describes himself as “the gayest man alive”.
When I began creating these beautiful femmes, they weren’t particularly popular in gay romance. I still get reviewers who go “uhhhh” when they encounter these guys, but I adore them and plan to give them their HEAs for as long as I keep writing fiction. I sometimes wonder where this fascination and admiration comes from. Maybe it’s because we often share a love of fashion and beauty products! LOL. But if you follow my blog, you may have heard me talk about the two young men who were close friends when I was in high school, who later turned out to be gay and influenced my desire to write gay romance.
One of them was a close friend of my brother – a couple years younger than me. Handsome, macho, athletic, a wrestling champion, he graduated, got married, and maybe had kids – I’m not sure. Many years later, as a successful owner of a moving company, he visited my mom in California – with his boyfriend. The boyfriend was gorgeous, and very, very flamboyant. All he wanted to do was visit South Coast Plaza, the world famous shopping mecca near where I live, and when he got there, he charmed the perfume out of the paws of every sales lady and customer. He was, like my character Shaz, “so far over the top he had his own cloud cover”.
My friend obviously adored him – and so did I. While I’d been around many gay men over the years (my early professional life was in theater and fashion), the times dictated that these guys be hidden and protective. This young man was none of those things. No one would ever have mistaken him for an alpha male, and despite egregious discrimination at the time, he appeared not to care.
I was only around him a couple days, but obviously he had a lasting impact. Like a breath of fresh air in a world of shadows and darkness, he shoved open doors like he didn’t know they were there. Let’s hear it for “the gayest men alive”. They have the most delightful lessons to teach all of us. And I hope you enjoy Bleu Balls where my two very flamboyant heroes give you a double dose of fabulous!

About the Author
