I ran my thumb across the back of his hand, marvelling at how nice it felt.
“What?” he asked, smiling at our joined hands.
“Nothing. I just wondered why people held hands. It feels nice.”
He blinked. “You’ve never held hands before?”
“Uh, no. I told you I ain’t ever had a boyfriend before. And random hook-up guys in the backroom of HQ aren’t there to hold hands.”
“Oh, of course. Sorry.” He threaded our fingers and used both hands to hold my one. “Do you like it?”
I nodded. “Yeah. But my hands are stained. The oil and grease at work just gets ingrained.”
He held up my hand and took a closer look at the blackened fingernail beds and in the creases, the callouses. “I like it,” he said, turning my hand over and looking at each side. Then he grinned at me. “Tells me you’re good with your hands.”
I didn’t want to laugh at the corny line but couldn’t help it. “I’ve never had any complaints.”
“I should think not,” he said, still smiling. “You know, maybe we should start a list of firsts. First hand-holding, first boyfriend . . . anything else we should add?”
I ignored his pry for more information. “What is it with you and lists?”
He grinned. “What can I say? I like to see my own progress.”
We both sat there holding hands and smiling at each other like giddy schoolboys. This was getting absurd. “I should probably go.”
“I’m adding first sleepover to the list.”
I snorted and stood up, reluctantly pulling my hand from his. “Thanks for lunch, and the drink. And helping me with the reading and stuff. And thank you for telling me about you.”
“Thank you for listening.” He stood up, getting to his full height with just an inch between us. He looked at my mouth, then leaned in slowly and almost kissed me. My heart damn near stopped. But he pressed himself against me, with his cheek to mine and his warm breath at my ear. I gasped as a shiver ran through me. “What are you doing?” I whispered.
“Counting down the days,” he replied, a soft murmur in my ear.
I took a step back, dizzy. “Whoa.”
His grin made his eyes do that crinkling thing, which didn’t help at all. “Still think you won’t beg me to kiss you in two weeks?”
“You don’t play fair.”
“Never said I did. But for what it’s worth, I’m playing for real.”

5+ Slow Burning Stars!!!

CJ Davis has been judged by his last name and his family all his life by most people. Now, almost at the end of his suspended jail sentence, all he wants is to put it all behind him and get it done. However, meeting his new parole officer might change things for him in more ways than he ever imagined. 

Noah Huxley is determined on being the best parole officer he can be and after meeting CJ and realizing how hard his life has been, he decides to help him in every way he can. The only problem? His growing attraction to CJ and the realization that his feelings might be reciprocated. 

My heart broke into a million pieces the more I learned about CJ's life. All he went through with his horrible father and his brothers, his problems at school, caring for his sick Pops and trying to make ends meet for him and his Pops. And still, he was such a loyal, supportive, hard-working man, despite it all. Yes, he had a chip on his shoulder the size of the world, but that was understandable all things considered. When Noah offered to help him, CJ was so wary, and when he realized Noah was really willing to help him and offered him his friendship and then more without wanting anything in return, I was melting right along with him. I loved Noah, even if there were a couple instances in which I wanted to strangle him for jumping to conclusions. Still, the way he treated CJ was amazing and I just adored him even more with each hug, with each action that proved that he wanted what was best for CJ. 

The chemistry between them was palpable, the unresolved sexual tension as they fought not to give in to their urges was sizzling, and the slow progression of their relationship from parole officer/parolee into more was just natural and organic and I couldn't get enough of it.

I adored Pops, he was awesome. He was such a sweet man, who tried to help CJ even if his sickness didn't allow him to do much. I absolutely detested CJ's father and was truly happy with his comeuppance. 😈 It definitely was the least he deserved.

All in all, I knew I was going to love this book from the getgo, it's N.R. Walker after all, and there's a reason she's one of my favorite authors. She just knows how to write characters that I fall in love with and become fully invested in, wrapped up in brilliant writing and fantastic storytelling that will tug at your heartstrings. You can't go wrong with this book or any by this author, so just go and one-click, I promise you won't regret it. Highly recommendable!!!
