I've been waiting for this book from the moment Keira announced she was writing it. Valor on the Move was perfect and while it ends with a strong HFN, I was looking forward to seeing how Rafa and Shane were doing and at the same time, I was kind of dreading it, since sequels usually mean trouble in paradise for the MCs.
Test of Valor can't be read as a standalone, so just pick Valor on the Move and then read this one, it's well worth it.
Rafa and Shane have been living in Australia for 5 months and are preparing for a visit from Rafa's parents, who aren't all that fond of Shane. Shane's been having nightmares and is having trouble admitting that both the inquest and his memories of Rafa's kidnapping might be the cause.
While Rafa and Shane are as in love as ever, the fact that Shane refuses to communicate with Rafa and Rafa's parents' interference in their relationship might prove to be a hurdle too difficult for them to overcome.
This book showed us how Shane and Rafa had been faring after Rafa's ordeal and while in the surface they seemed alright, things weren't exactly perfect between them. I hated Shane's inability to share what he was going through with Rafa and how he kept thinking he knew better. Yes, Rafa is younger than him, but Shane kept telling him they were partners, equals, and then shutting him out because he already had enough stress with starting school and his parents and I just wanted to slap some sense into Shane. And then we have Rafa and his reaction to finding out that Shane had slept with his friend Darnell, while it was blown out of proportion a bit, it was understandable all things considered. Same as when he found out that Shane had told Darnell about the nightmares and not Rafa.
Ms. Andrews managed to recapture the chemistry between them and the sex scenes were very steamy and plentiful, but above all, I loved that they finally managed to get with the program and put things in perspective and that we got to see some growth in them both.
I wasn't too sure what to make of Rafa's parents, especially his mother since she was a b*tch. I get that it's difficult for a parent to see their son with someone so much older than them, but she actually took pleasure in throwing things in Rafa's face that she knew would hurt him, even if that wasn't exactly her intention. She did get better eventually, but really, the woman grated on my nerves.
Overall, this was a great addition to the series and it just proved what I knew all along, that Shane and Rafa are just perfect for each other and despite the age difference, with some work, love and communication, they'd find their HEA. Highly recommendable!
