Working for the Bureau of Prohibition means facing dangerous criminals, desperate gangsters, speakeasies springing up overnight, a city controlled by corruption, and an employer that can’t be trusted. If that’s not enough, best friends and lovers Harlan Mackay and Nathan Reilly still bear the scars—both seen and unseen—that they earned fighting in the First World War. When a ghost from the past resurfaces to destroy everything they hold dear, it might be the last straw for Harlan and Nathan.

New York City is a war zone, the government is in the pocket of organized crime, and the exposure of their illicit romance is a constant danger. For Harlan and Nathan, it’s not a question of whether they’ll escape unscathed, but of which enemy will get them first….

4 Stars!

I’m a huge Charlie Cochet fan so I wanted to give this one a try even if I’m not traditionally a big fan of historical stories. I really liked the time period RITDG took place in. The whole idea of the Prohibition and Speakeasies, bootleggers and the roaring twenties was fun and I enjoyed the picture Charlie painted for me with her writing.

I found it entertaining and thought it was well done. Both Nate and Harlan were well written and I really liked their relationship and how they both seemed to fit so well with one another as both partners and lovers. The bit of conflict and angst brought on by the reemergence of someone from Nate’s past seemed a tad anticlimactic but, honestly, it could’ve been due to the length of the book.

Overall, I’d recommend this story to anyone who likes this time period and fans of Charlie Cochet.
