Inspiring Witchbane
By Morgan Brice
My new novel, Witchbane, is the first in an urban fantasy M/M paranormal romance series, and the inspirations to write the series—as well as launch a new pen name in a new genre—might surprise you!
Here’s the quick recap for Witchbane: Seth Tanner and his brother Jesse's fun evening debunking local urban legends ends with Jesse's gruesome murder. Seth vows revenge on Jesse's killer--too bad the murderer has been dead for a hundred years. Seth uncovers a cycle of ritual killings that feeds the power of a dark warlock's immortal witch-disciples, and he's hell bent on stopping Jackson Malone from becoming the next victim. He's used to risking his neck. He never intended to risk his heart.
Witchbane is my first novel under the pen name Morgan Brice, but as Gail Z. Martin I’ve been published for eleven years writing epic fantasy, urban fantasy, steampunk and comedic horror. So while Witchbane led me into new territory in some ways, it definitely wasn’t my first rodeo!
One of the things that inspired Witchbane was how much I enjoyed reading M/M urban fantasy/paranormal romance written by other people. I’ve binge read Jordan L. Hawk, Charlie Cochet, Rhys Ford, Jordan Castillo Price, Mary Calmes and many other fine M/M authors, and loved the stories they wove and the characters they created. My writer brain tends to sit back and observe when I get really into a sub-genre, and then wander off to come up with a new series of my own. Reading the books was so much fun, I wanted in on the joy of creating them.
The seeds to Witchbane also lie in my Deadly Curiosities urban fantasy series, published under my Gail Z. Martin name. In that series, Teag Logan and his longtime partner Anthony Benton aren’t the main characters, but they play a recurring and significant role in the books and novellas as best friends and backup to Cassidy Kincaide. That series is more action than romance, but part of me wondered what it would have been like if Teag and Anthony had been the main characters, and their developing relationship had been the focus. The characters in Witchbane are very different from Teag and Anthony, but writing the book scratched some of that itch for me, and I’m looking forward to exploring relationships in the other books in the Witchbane series, as well as the other new urban fantasy M/M paranormal romance series I’ve got planned!
The books in the Witchbane series will each be set in a different city. I picked Richmond, VA for the first novel because we lived there for a few years and it’s a city with a troubled history, ripe for a good ghost story. Many of the places I mention in the book were favorites when I lived there, and it was fun revisiting Richmond as I researched elements to use in Witchbane. (Dark Rivers, the next book in the series, is set in Pittsburgh, PA, where we lived for 10 years.). It’s a blast for me to draw on personal experience with a location to make it real for the reader, and to slip a little bit of myself into the story by sharing some of my favorite places and spaces.
The truth is, everything around me inspires my books. What I see on TV, what I read, what’s in the news, places I go, people I meet, stories told to me long ago, things I’ve done and things I remember. It’s all grist for the book mill, and I sometimes think my brain is a big stew pot where odd details and trivia simmer until they turn into a delicious story!
I’ll be a Supporting Author at Gay Romantic Lit Retreat in October, so please look me up and say hello!

On the rare occasions Morgan isn’t writing, she’s either reading, cooking, or spoiling two very pampered dogs.
