Crocus is Book 2 in Amy Lane’s Bonfires series and it cannot be read as a standalone! Seriously, these are the same characters from Book 1, and it’s their story continuing, so don’t read it by itself. Also, Book 1 is fantastic so you don’t want to skip it (the audio is terrific, too!)!
I loved Larx and Aaron and jumped at the chance of catching up with them again. Their life has only gotten more chaotic as they blend two families into one, plus the additions that they can’t help adding to their family. I always worry about reading follow-up books like this because I have no interest in seeing a favorite couple struggle in their relationship. Fortunately, that is not what this book was about! Aaron and Larx’s love for each other is strong, and so is their relationship. Though Larx is still struggling with the dangers involved in Aaron’s job, and that’s put to the test. In this book, Larx is pushed to his limit of being the responsible adult juggling everyone without Aaron to provide him support. But, there is never a doubt about Aaron and Larx and their love and relationship.
Larx’s daughter and her mental health issues come to a head. I thought the author did a great job handling the storyline of depression and the effects of it on not only the person suffering but those that love the person. And, because we had Olivia’s POV at times, we were able to see firsthand her struggle with depression. Of course, that’s not the only drama going on. Larx’s relationship and need to help his students leads to a lot more than he bargained, and he ends up collecting more people into his ever-expanding family.
What I loved the most, was that regardless of the dangers and drama, the love between Larx and Aaron is tangible. Even when each man is working on his own, the overall need is to make things safe for their family. They are strong men who live life and love hard. They will protect their families and each other from whatever will come. This is a must read series, in my opinion, and one that I will read over and over again (or listen over and over again)!
