While this book gripped me from the very first page and I was utterly enthralled with it, I realized I kept asking myself the same question over and over. "Why is she (Nina) so stupid?" I mean come on, woman, you get a frantic phone call with your partner giving you the code for Danger! Danger! Get as far away as you can. Followed by you hearing him being murdered and what do you do? You run straight over to his house. Then because you have the intelligence of a gnat you go against your boss and start an investigation into your partner's death even though you've been warned not to. You let a complete stranger who, I might add, is scary as F*ck have sex with you (hopefully, those three orgasms were worth it) while handcuffed to your bed, let's not forget there was no mention of a condom (hope your doc can squeeze you in). Then, yep there's more. Then you go meet a man who is known to have connections with a drug cartel and was suspended from his job because of most likely being dirty. All after various people have given you warnings. Now maybe it's just me, but personally, my butt would have been on the first plane to Alaska without a backward glance. Call me a coward but my idea of fun is not having my face and head blown to smithereens by my own service weapon *bangs head against the table*.
Okay, so this book has a lot going on making it a bit complicated (which, honestly, is what made it so exciting). It had lots of suspense and intrigue. There are many different players in the story making you wonder who's good and who's bad. Which side are they on, who can Nina trust? There is not a single character in this book who doesn't make you wonder if they are good or bad. Nina seems to trust everyone without a second thought, even herself. Personally, I felt she was so far out of her depth she needed to stop trusting people (a warning she gets from someone in the very beginning of the story). She also needs to admit to herself she doesn't know what she's doing.
Why the heck she would trust Ruiz I have no clue. Ugh, it's disgusting. I hate to say it, but no man, I don't care how sexy or how great his d*ck is would make me trust him with my life in a situation like Nina is in. And then when things go bad she actually acts as if she is surprised that he broke her heart. Geez Louise, Nina! He told you he wasn't a good guy.
Alas, it all comes down to being complicated. Nothing is as it seems and if you blink you'll end up missing something. But like an addiction to crack (I'm just guessing, I've never tried crack, I promise) I just couldn't put it down. The writing is so well done, the story thoroughly thought out, the characters well developed and multidimensional, and while I might not be the biggest fan of Nina, I am definitely a fan of Never Trust A Stranger.

So in book two we get a look at the things we weren't privy to in book one along with a whole slew of new information. And wow, just wow, some of it is really hard to read. The author did not pull any punches with this one. We meet Antonio Suárez, Special Forces as he and his best friend Jace are mid-mission, things not going to plan. Afterward, when his commanding officer orders Antonio and Jace on leave and to turn in their weapons it becomes clear things aren't as the seem.
Later Antonio is visited by two men from his father's village and in asking for help they tell Antonio a story. A story of a village in Colombia where they farm Coca plants. And this is a story that had me wanting to cry for the people there. It's sad, it's graphic and horrifying. It doesn't get easier after that. Instead, we see Antonio and Jace infiltrate the Village and learn about Antonio's family and the things he's seen. And from there we see how it all began and eventually will end.
This book was so much more intense to read, vivid in detail and so much more personal than book one. This changes everything, the way I saw the events from book one, the way I felt about the characters. While Never Trust A Saint had me wanting to shake sense into Nina, The Perfect Stranger had me going "aha, that's why Antonio did that!" Everything just pulled together so well.
I definitely recommend this series. I am now going to be on the lookout for more stories from this author.
