A trust destroyed is a trust that is hard to recover…
Brendan Matthews is happy training racehorses for a living. He thinks he’s hit the jackpot when a wealthy orthopedic surgeon, Adam Ahmadi, sends six yearlings his way. Not only are the horses a cut above the rest, their owner isn’t too shabby either.
But not everything is as it seems. Adam has many secrets, most of them dark and deadly. When Adam’s past returns with a vengeance, he disappears, leaving Brendan confused and hurt.
If Adam survives, will his past destroy their future?

3.5 Stars

Racehorse trainer, Brendan Matthews meets Dr. Adam Ahmadi, a retired orthopedic surgeon, after he sends Brendan his 6 yearlings. They hit it off great and start a nice friendship, which slowly turns into more until Adam disappears into thin air the first time. When he comes back again with promises of never leaving like that again, Adam never imagined that his past would come back to threaten his future.

Brendan was such a lovely character. Sweet and forgiving, perhaps too much so. Adam seemed really nice at first, however, when he disappeared the first time without telling Brendan and Brendan took him back without much of a fuss, I started having some doubts. Especially when someone from Adam's past went and talked to Brendan. Couldn't Adam have picked a phone and explained himself before? It wasn't like he didn't have the time, it was cowardly of him to let Nina go and explain it all.

One of my pet peeves is when the character who is in the wrong doesn't grovel enough. In this case, Adam didn't. It felt like they just swept the issues under the rug and moved on from it. Anyway, the characters had chemistry and I loved that they took their time to build a friendship before moving forward. I just wished Adam had been less of an asshat to Brendan. *sighs*

The whole Adam's past plotline and it's resurgence into his present was really intriguing and it had more than enough twists and turns too keep my interest, especially during the second half of the book. I think the romance fell to a second plane with everything else that was happening, though.

I had high hopes for this book, I read A Tournament of Shadows by this author and absolutely loved it, so I jumped at the chance of reading An Unexpected Truth. While it's very well-written, it didn't quite work for me. Still, it doesn't mean that others won't enjoy it.

Recommendable!
