Must find an enemy to spare. I've found that this series is pretty hot or miss. Some of the books I've adored, others I've liked, then there are the ones that I just don't care for. Lochlann is hard for me because in truth, while the writing was well done and the premise quite intriguing, the actual story basically bored me. I did not care about the characters, the story or the romance. I have a hard time even understanding what the story actually is about because, in the end, I never felt like anything got resolved.
Lochlann's backstory was pretty interesting and I honestly wanted to know more, maybe actually get to see the events discussed that led to his induction into Alpha. I never really felt like we got to connect with Lochlann. I'm pretty sure I didn't even like or dislike him.
Cas was pretty much the same as far as my apathy is concerned. Of course I knew even less about him than Lochlann, so I couldn't begin to try to feel anything for his character. It definitely didn't help that I have no clue how he even stayed alive because he came off as unskilled and weak to me (for a Drug Cartel Assassin).
I felt no chemistry between the characters and really can't see why they wanted each other. It didn't work for me at all. Lochlann was closer to Inga and definitely had better chemistry with her. I'd understand them as a couple before I believe Lochlann and Cas.
Overall, I can say Andrea Speed can write and has done a great job at creating this world but I just couldn't get into the story. I wanted more, more excitement, action, romance and angst. I don't think I would recommend this one unless you're a huge fan of the series.
