Author Interview:

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Caraway Carter author of Storming Love: Earthquake Anders & Ujaruk
Hi Caraway, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

1. Tell us something no one else knows about your characters.
The character of Anders’ ex-boyfriend was based on an actual professor a very close friend of mine had. Not the relationship they had, but the torture the professor put my friend through. This professor made them take longer to get a Master’s than it should take.

I’m talking about the paper you had me work on for the past six years. The one you made me recreate all the tables for and redo the statistical evidence for, with three different methods.
My friend approved and loved this little added detail to the story, at first it had the real full name of the Professor, but we felt it would be best to just keep it simple.

2) What inspires you in life or in writing?
Everything inspires me. Usually, I see a picture or I read something online. I’ve been working off of prompts a lot lately. I have about 13 folders on my desktop with scrivener files set up. I look at pictures, websites, videos. I create playlists on Spotify to get in the mood. I find pictures of what my characters look like. In fact when I wrote Anders & Ujaruk, I had Anders on one side of the screen, Ujaruk on the other and had Scrivener open in Full Screen Composition mode. I discovered that you can lighten up the background, so their pictures could be seen.

Something happens when I write, the character speaks to me, tells me exactly how something went. So my first draft is generally tell, not show. Then I have to go back and tweak it, show what just happened. I’ve often thought I was crazy, but others tell me they hear their characters too, so I’m feeling much better about this revelation.

3) What is the most important thing about your subject/genre that people need to know? I
think it’s the way I write. I might not always have heat in my stories. I’ve been told I’m a relationship writer. I like to get to the bottom of what makes these characters tick, and that doesn’t always include sex. I have to tell you being married to a sociologist, might also be part of what makes me want to know what makes people tick.

4) How did you become involved in the subject/theme of your book?
There was a call for MLR Press authors to write the Storming Love series. I have first hand knowledge of earthquakes, and it sounded like the best fit for me. Now, I have never been to Alaska, but I really love to research places, locations and I had a friend who had knowledge of the area.

I live in Southern California, we are known for quakes. It was very interesting, when I turned in my story, there was an earthquake earlier in the day. And several other earthquakes all over the world. I kept asking my other co-authors if we were causing them because of our collective conscience.

5) What famous person (living or dead) would you like to meet and why?
There is a science fiction author I have loved from the day I was lent a copy of his book, Dahlgren. Samuel R. Delany. I have nearly every one of his books, they are hard to find sometimes, lots of them are out of print. But, whenever I go to a used book store, I make a beeline to the D section to look for him. In fact, I have two or three copies of the same book, just because they have different covers.

So, imagine my surprise, when I found him on Facebook and he accepted my friend request. I now have a connection to him, and then was chatting with another author idol, Laura Antoniou, who told me of the time that Chip showed up at one of her parties and helped reenact one of her spanking stories.

I think I would love to be at a party with both of them to watch that reenactment.

List the first five things you would do if you suddenly had millions of dollars.

1. I would pay off my husband’s student loans.
2. I would invest in a Craftsmen home in Belmont Heights.
3. I would sell our cars, and buy two new Toyota Prii (Prius).
4. I would quit my day job, and write full time.
5. I would have a tiny office built in my backyard, so that I could go to the office to write and get away.

Releases 7/17  Rhody & Brendan by Diana DeRicci

Rhody Witte is on his way to Alaska for two weeks of fishing and not much else. Mountains, clean air, and all the bait he can waste. What he gets is the largest earthquake to rock the Alaskan wilds in sixty-plus years.
Brendan Skorvarski isn’t the kind of man Rhody usually finds himself attracted to, much less want to know, but there’s something in the gentle giant that Rhody can’t seem to resist.
When they’re locked up in a cabin together for days in the Alaskan wilderness, resistance seems futile when survival takes precedence. Especially their survival when Rhody sees a bear outside their window.
