About the Book

Title: The Chosen
Author: Annette Gisby
Genre: M/M Fantasy Romance

The neighbouring kingdoms of Oscia and Arcathia have been at a tentative peace for three years after centuries of warfare. Prince Severin of Arcathia has been brought up to put duty before all else and as the only son of the King and Queen, it is his duty to marry and produce an heir. His parents want him to marry an Oscian princess to cement that tentative peace. Unfortunately Severin isn't interested in princesses. Now, if he had his pick of princes that would be another matter.

Havyn has been a slave all his life. When his aptitude for wizardry is discovered, he finds himself purchased and freed by Prince Severin and apprenticed to the royal wizard, Ildar. His duty is to stay chaste to keep his powers strong, but his feelings for Severin sorely test his resolve.

With kingdoms at war, the throne hanging in the balance, magic in the air, and outside forces trying to keep them apart, can the two men find happiness together, or is duty more important than love?

Excerpt:

He'll need some wizarding robes, too," said Severin to Iri, the royal tailor. "What do you think might suit?"

"With his colouring, purple would go well," replied Iri, a wizened old man with as many cracks in his face as old parchment. What little hair he had, just two tufts of it by his ears, was grey, as were his eyes. His back was stooped as if he spent a lot of time bent over sewing and cutting tables.

"No, not purple. My father would never allow that."

"Of course. How about a deep red? Or even jade? That would set off his dark hair brilliantly. How about some paler colours? Yellow or blue?" The tailor moved over to the bed where bolts of fabric in various hues lay. There were silks, linen, cotton, velvets, furs, and more, all haphazardly piled on Havyn's bed. Iri lifted up a swathe of pale yellow and draped it across Havyn's shoulders.

"No, not yellow," said Severin. "Try the jade and the ruby."

Once again, Havyn's shoulders were draped in the different fabrics. Iri and Severin both nodded. "Make a set in the jade and the ruby," said Severin. "He'll need new tunics and leggings as well as hose. And formal wear for the betrothal ceremony. I think the ruby would do for a formal robe."

"Of course, your highness. Anything else?"

"I think that's everything. Will you have it ready by the time we need to leave?"

"We'll get started right away. The wardrobe should be finished in about five days."

"Excellent. Thank you, Iri."

"What is going on in here?" demanded Ildar from the doorway. "Severin? What are you doing with my apprentice?"

"Iri and I were just sorting out Havyn's new wardrobe," said Severin, waving to Havyn that he could get dressed again. Havyn quickly pulled on the tunic and leggings Ildar had given him on his first night at the palace. A fierce blush heated his cheeks.

"Havyn is my apprentice!" snapped Ildar. "He is my responsibility. Furs and velvets? Silks? A wizard has no need for all of that. I will ensure Havyn gets all the clothing he needs, not you."

Havyn wondered how the wizard could talk back so forcefully to a prince without worrying about execution. Maybe wizards had no fear of death.

"He's my responsibility," protested Severin, his hands on his hips as he stared the wizard down. "I bought him. He's mine!"

Prince Severin bought a slave at an auction with the only intention of setting him free. However, Havyn has nowhere else to go and when they realize he has aptitude for magic and is indeed a Truth Seeker, Severin decides he should be Ildar, the Royal Mage's apprentice.

Severin and Havyn are both attracted to each other, but Severin has to marry the Oscian princess to cement the tentative truce among their reigns. When they arrive for the wedding, they find that the princess has been kidnapped and they set up on a quest to find her.

Severin and Havyn are unable to hide their feelings, but there are many things that set them apart.

I have to admit I'm not much for reading fantasy books, however, once I saw the gorgeous cover I just couldn't help myself and I'm glad for that. This was a very detailed book, through which I was transported to another time and place.

Havyn was adorable and while Severin behaved a bit spoiled sometimes, he's quite likable, too. The array of supporting characters make this story deeper and richer and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Very recommendable!

Rating: 4.5 Stars!!!

Annette Gisby grew up in a small town in Northern Ireland moving to London when she was seventeen. Being a very small town there were no bookshops and a small library. When she’d devoured every book she could get her hands on in the library, she started writing her own stories so she would always have something to read later.

When not writing she enjoys reading, cinema, theatre, walks along deserted beaches or wandering around ruined castles (great places for inspiration!) She loves travelling to distant places to see different cultures first
hand, even though she gets travel sick on most forms of transport.

She currently lives in Hamsphire with her husband, a collection of porcelain dolls, cuddly toys and enough books to fill a library.
