Release Day Review: Long Black Cadillac by BA Tortuga (Giveaway)

Title: Long Black Cadillac
Author: BA Tortuga

Release Date: October 12, 2018
Category: Paranormal - Vampires
Pages: 193

When cop-turned-vampire-hunter Vance is sent to eliminate a bloodsucker from the Louisiana swamps, he figures it’s just another day at the office.

But he has no idea what he’s getting into.

Clay is no ordinary vampire, and the spark he lights in battle-scarred Vance is anything but average. Clay should be the enemy, but Vance is powerless to fight something that feels so right… and so damn good. In Clay’s expert hands, Vance might realize he’s misjudged vampires and that donating a little blood can be sexy as hell.

Clay might even ride to the rescue and save his new love when Vance’s mission goes south and Vance becomes the hunted instead of the hunter. Along with his human familiar, a crazy Cajun named Remy, and the enigmatic older vampire Gryphon, Clay must get to Vance before it’s too late. Then they can find the man who betrayed Vance and take their revenge.

But faced with lies and motives darker than they ever imagined, they’ll have to wade through blood and fight their way to a happily ever after….

First Edition published by Torquere Press, July 2007.

I’m pretty sure you are supposed to like the MCs a smidge or so if you are going to enjoy a book. However, from the very first page, I pretty much thought Vance was a P.O.S. I didn’t like him at all and although I assume his foul-mouthed aggressive behavior was supposed to come across as humorous, I just found it annoying. Clay really wasn’t much better and his use of Honey as an endearment drove me insane.

Did these two have chemistry? Definitely. However, I would’ve preferred the book to be more about what’s going on outside of the bedroom than the copious amounts of sex they seem to have. Not to mention it kind of took off into a direction I wasn’t expecting when Remy and then Gryphon came into the picture. I’m not particularly fond of the dynamic actually if I’m being honest.

The plot itself was interesting and had it been the main focus I probably would’ve been far more entertained. I love a good balance of action and romance. There really wasn’t much romance at all, more of a lust-filled obsession that took over the characters. And of course, some hunting. Luckily though the book is filled with an abundance of humor which made it better.

In the end, I’d say if you’re looking for a sexier paranormal story, Long Black Cadillac may be the ticket but if you are in the mood for something deeper, this might not be for you.

3 Stars!

I try to not anticipate anything when I start a book. I like seeing where the story takes me without initial expectations getting in the way. Unfortunately, I found myself looking for more than there was in this book.

Ex-cop Vance is currently working as a vampire hunter. He doesn't know much about them or even why he's paid to do it. Mostly, he just tries to get them to move onto somewhere else rather than kill them. His latest assignment turns out to be Clay. Clay isn't sure why Vance is after him and he doesn't know Vance's boss, but he can't seem to keep his hands off the hunter. With Clay's human familiar, Remy, on hand to help, and an older vampire added to the mix, things get interesting.

This story is heavy on the sexy times. The vampires are hedonists and fairly territorial. My problem was there wasn't a whole lot to explain the bad guy or his motivation. When the characters aren't having sex with each other, there's not a lot of dialogue that helps develop the characters. The world building is sorely lacking and I wanted to know more about the vampires and their powers. I don't mind a sex-heavy story, but this one just left too much unknown for me.

If you like vampire stories with lots of sex, you may like this book.
