Book Tour: Casino Girl by Leslie Wolfe (Review + Giveaway)

Casino Girl
Baxter and Holt #2
by Leslie Wolfe
Genre: Crime, Suspense Thriller

In Las Vegas, secrets are deadly.

Detectives Laura Baxter and Jack Holt are members of the elite: Las Vegas Metro PD, one of the toughest and most respected law enforcement agencies in the United States. In the middle of a city with two million residents and 43 million annual visitors, they’re hunting for a killer.

The girl

When a beautiful, young girl is killed in the high-roller Pleasure Pit of the exclusive Scala Casino, the news reverberates for hours among the ritzy clientele. Before taking the stage where she found her death, Crystal was last seen boarding an unmarked helicopter for a late-night flight to an unknown destination.

The money

The stakes are high at the roulette table, and the players are hot-blooded. Among them, a stone-cold killer watches, waits, and kills without leaving a single trace of evidence. Rien ne va plus but death.

The game

The name of the game is murder, and it doesn’t stop with Crystal’s demise. Anyone who threatens to expose the killer’s identity will soon find they’re being targeted.

In Las Vegas, secrets can kill.

Two mavericks make an intriguing team. Baxter and Holt trust each other with their lives, only not with their darkest secrets.

Casino Girl is the second book in Leslie Wolfe’s Baxter and Holt series. I’ve read the first book in the series and I really recommend that you do so as well before reading this one. This series follows police detectives Laura Baxter and Jack Holt and they’re introduced as partners in the first book. Plus, some things from that book carry to this one so it’s going to be a more enjoyable read if you have that information going into this book.

This book and series is very much a police procedure, but a tangled one of imperfect people who find themselves pulled in many directions while trying to also do their job. Many times through both books I thought Baxter made some poor choices because she responds emotionally and immediately to situations instead of stopping to consider all the other options available to her. Most of the time this works out for her but many times it puts her at having a new situation to clean up. Baxter is very secretive and has trust issues, which is not changed in this book though Holt is going to force the issue.

Both Baxter and Holt are good detectives for the most part, though their lines of right and wrong are blurred. As with the first book, the murder and detective work is very well done. There is a lot going on in these books so the focus is not all on solving the case, but in the million other things that are also pulling at both the detectives’ attention. This is integrated well into the storyline but at some points, I was like, enough with this and let’s figure out who committed the murder.

What I’m not a fan of in my thriller/mystery/police procedures, is the time taken up by a relationship or non-relationship. The push back and forth between Baxter and Holt gets on my nerves, especially Baxter’s actions. I get that she’s not ready/interested in a relationship or more with Holt, again. No problem. But the minute someone flirts with him or he flirts with someone she’s jealous. Multiple times in the story. She needs to get over herself. She either wants him or doesn’t, and quit with the ridiculous behavior. Plus, get it together and quit taking up storytime from solving all the things happening in the book… lol, well, anyway, just my opinion. ;-)

Regardless, this is a really well-written, action-packed series that grabs your attention from the first page. I can’t wait for the next book in the series and can’t recommend enough that you give this series a try, especially if you enjoy thrillers, mysteries, and police procedures!
