Shy tattoo artist Ash has a troubled past. Years of neglect, drug abuse, and life on the streets have taken their toll, and sometimes it seems the deep, unspoken bond with his lover is the only balm for wounds he doesn’t quite understand.
Chicago paramedic Pete is warmth, love, and strength—things Ash never knew he could have, and never even knew he wanted until Pete showed him. But fate is a cruel, cruel mistress, and when nightmares collide with the present, their tentatively built world comes crashing down.
Traumatic events in Pete’s work life distance him from home, and he doesn’t realize until it’s too late that Ash has slipped away. Betrayal, secrets, and lies unfold, and when a devastating coincidence takes hold, Pete must fight with all he has to save the love of his life.

Paramedic Pete Adams lived through the year from hell watching his lover, Ash, fall apart, and the precarious balance between work and home is becoming more strained. His heart is always home, with Ash, but the dark side to his job is weighing him down.
Tattoo artist Ash Fagin is recovering from a nervous breakdown triggered by revelations about his traumatic childhood. His battle with mental illness is far from over, but with Pete by his side, he's feeling good again, so good he doesn’t notice something missing until it walks right into his living room.
Ash believes he’s had enough coincidence in his life, but when a voice from the past comes looking for him, it takes the devastating injuries of the one he loves most to convince him to let a ghost become the family he never knew he wanted.
In this novel, we meet Pete, a paramedic, and Ash, a homeless artist battling mental illness. Pete and Ash's relationship evolves after Ash comes to stay with Pete. This story is about how love blossomed between these men, in spite of Ash's illness.
I found this to be an impactful story on many levels. I love beautifully broken characters and Ash fits the bill. I am captivated by this story due to the real way Ms. Leigh treats Ash's illness and Pete's reactions to it. The emotions the story evokes are real and genuine and deep. This book will haunt you. It's such a mix of dark and gloomy subject matter, mixed with the sunrays of light from true love and genuine affection. It gave me ALL the feels!

Rare gives us readers an opportunity to revisit Ash and Pete after the events of book 1. As a reader who not only fell in love with broken Ash and heroic Pete individually, I fell in love with them as a couple. I was so curious how they were managing after Ash's breakdown. As this book opens, they've moved into a new apartment and things are looking brighter. Well, needless to say, things don't stay that way and this couple is tested yet again. This time it's Pete's turn at bat and it was almost more dramatic than the strong paramedic struggles in this one. Ash supports his man, and it is wonderful to see how their relationship and trust grows as they face more and more challenges together. It was certainly interesting to see the almost switching of caretaker roles. In book 1, it was Pete taking care of Ash as he broke down mentally. In this one, it's Ash taking care of Pete after he's injured.
As usual, Ms. Leigh does a tremendous job evoking the feels and you can't help but feel like you're living vicariously through the characters and feeling every hurt and celebrating every joy. Again, this is not a happy, sweet read. You will feel emotionally wrung out after, but in a good way.
