Release Boost: ab·so·lu·tion: a novel by Ava Harrison (Review + Teasers)

Title: ab·so·lu·tion: a novel
Author: Ava Harrison
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: October 6, 2018
I was done with love.
When I opened my heart, it was for the men I couldn't have.
The unattainable ones.
The ones who would hurt me.
A vicious cycle I couldn’t seem to stop.
But I had a new resolve.
Focus on my career.
Stay single.
And then I met him.
Jace Montgomery.
A wounded widower with two young kids.
He was exactly everything I was avoiding.
So I did my best to stay away.
But then he kissed me.
And I fell.
Hard.
Hard for a man who would never be mine…
A man who was broken beyond repair.
A man who would break me.

3.5 Stars

I was actually looking forward to this book, the last one I read by Ava Harrison, Explicit, was really good. Unfortunately, while this book is well-written and has most of the elements of what I enjoy in a book, I found it difficult to connect with the characters.

Let's start with Jace, who I just wanted to scream at from the moment I met him. I could understand he was in pain after losing his wife the way he did, but at the same time, he had two small children who depended on him (or rather the very efficient nanny, since Jace couldn't really be bothered). It broke my heart that these little kids had to whisper and don't bother dad, because the guy was a selfish jackass completely absorbed in grief and his work. And then we have Sydney, who I never managed to fully warm up to, even if I felt bad for some of the things she had to live through, both before and after she met Jace. Did they have chemistry? Yes, sure, and the sex scenes were hot, too, but I need more than that.

The book is emotional and angsty, and perhaps if I'd find some redeemable quality in Jace, I might have enjoyed it more. As it is, it's more a case of this book not being the right fit for me, but that doesn't mean that others might not enjoy it.
