Blurb:

Two men destroyed by the past learn to live—and love—again.
Kyle Braden has nowhere else to go. With no money, no prospects, and no drive to be something else, he turns to the only man who promises him help. Jack Campbell-Hayes wants to show Kyle that he can be more than he ever thought.

Kyle gets to realize just how far he’s come from being the scarred man who shut everyone out, when the first person through the doors of Legacy Ranch carries a gun and threatens to kill anyone who comes near him. Kyle wants to be the man that someone turns to for help and it scares him.

Thrown out of his house and with three years on the streets marking every inch of his body, Jason Smith is scared. His life is an evil mess of hate and despair, and even the offer of a fresh start and a clean bed isn’t enough for him to hand over his gun. He’s cheated death twice, and he’s not letting there be a third time—he might not be so lucky.

For these broken men, Legacy Ranch offers more than a place to live and work.

It offers hope.

A new story set in the world of Jack and Riley Campbell-Hayes and the Double D Ranch, Texas.

Kyle has survived a rough, brutal, abusive and violent life with all the emotional scars to show for it. He trusts no one and sizes every person he meets on whether he could win against them if he needed to escape them. He works for the Double D Ranch and is being promoted to foreman over the newest addition, The Legacy Ranch. Kyle would rather just spend his time with the horses, doing his job and not being around people.

Jason has lived in the streets for many years and has survived by whatever means necessary. He has learned that people are not trustworthy and are going to use you. Jason is brought to help build The Legacy Ranch with Kyle.

This is Book 1 of the series, a spinoff from the Texas series. You can read this book in its own, but I think to get full enjoyment of all the characters you get to see again, that you should do yourself a favor read/reread the Texas series. Kyle also appeared in the Texas series so part of his story is known. And if you read that, you came into this book knowing it wasn't going to be a pretty, happy story.

This story is about two scarred, broken men learning to find themselves and learning to look outside themselves and finding someone who needs to be cared for and protected.

This book is less a romance and more about two men finding someone they can trust and count on. Kyle and Jason learn to focus less on themselves and learn to help each other negotiate through various triggers. They learn to trust and lean on each other.

This is not going to be an easy to read series. The readers of the Texas series have read about the abuse suffered by these men who will be in the Legacy series. I think these books will be emotional and heartbreaking but I hope by the end that the men will get a HEA.

Rating: 4 Stars!

Generally speaking, I am all for hurt/comfort, dark, emotionally charged books.  So I'm not quite sure if it is because I had just finished reading a super sweet book prior to this one or if it's the fact that this was a little more dark than I generally associate with this author, whatever the reason, I found myself struggling with Kyle by R.J. Scott.

Kyle is struggling to heal from the horrific abuse he suffered at the hands of Hank Castille. Working for Jack has provided him with a little more security but it's still hard not to look for an escape every time he's faced with a perceived threat. And in his mind, every man is a perceived threat.  Feeling more secure when he's working alone, he's not happy to learn that he'll be tasked with watch out for Legacy Ranch's newest addition.

Jason has spent the past few years on the street selling his body to survive. He's no stranger to being used, so when he's sent to work and live at the newly developing Legacy Ranch Jack is building, he's expecting the other shoe to drop any minute. Plagued with nightmares and fighting depression and anxiety he's struggling to try and heal.

The two broken men soon start to recognize pain in the other. It's obvious they suffer from similar horrors. However, can two men who are this broken help one another to heal?  Will they be able to find love and happiness?

I'm generally cheering for the characters that are damaged to find love and happiness, to heal from the pain they've suffered. And I so felt for Kyle, his distress broke my heart. He was so broken that I wanted to cry when watching how he had to talk himself through so many of his interactions with the men on the ranch.  He definitely felt real to me and quite a bit younger than he actually was. I think that's one of the reasons I had such a hard time with this story. This man needed serious help, his internal suffering was extreme. I had a very hard time thinking about him in a relationship yet, even with someone as damaged as Jason.

Jason was a whole different story for me, though. Yes, I felt bad for him, he had gone through things no one should ever have to experience. But I just couldn't connect to him. I know it was a defense mechanism, but his abrasive nature put me off.  I could understand his issues with trust but the way he spoke to Kyle in the beginning, knowing that something must be causing Kyle's distress made me angry and disgusted. I found myself unable to like him.

I'm sure this will be a great series, I'm a fan of R.J. Scott and there's no doubt I'll read more. I'm just not loving book one but I have a feeling I'll be in the minority.  I definitely would like to see more of Kyle though, see how he's healing. As well as Jack and Riley.

3.5 Stars!
