~ Introducing Mr. Winterbourne ~
4.25 Stars
Joanna Chambers is one of my favorite historical authors because she always does a fantastic job transporting me back to the period she's writing with her elegant prose and language. Introducing Mr. Winterbourne was no different.
While Lysander and Adam don't exactly hit it off at first—alright, alright, it was mostly Adam who was prejudiced against Lysander—once Lysander realized how the rest of his peers and even his own father were treating Adam and Adam saw that Lysander wasn't just a rich boy, but a man of substance, that all changed. It was lovely to see these two dancing around each other, both literally and figuratively. They were just so perfectly matched and I loved how things played out so they could explore their relationship further. I can't wait to see more of them in the next installment.
Very recommendable!

~ Mr. Winterbourne's Christmas ~
4.5 Stars
Whereas Introducing Mr. Winterbourne was a short story showing how Lysander and Adam met and started their relationship, Mr. Winterbourne's Christmas is a lengthier piece that starts 18 months later. Lysander has been working at Adam's estate as his steward and they've been lovers during this time, but neither of them is sure of the other's feelings. When they're invited to Winterbourne Abbey to spend Christmas, they face some obstacles that might end their relationship.
I really enjoyed seeing how well suited Lysander and Adam were for each other. They made each other better and happier than they'd been on their own and while there's a bit of an age gap (8 years), it doesn't really make an impact on their relationship. What does, though, is that they're each insecure about the other's feelings, Lysander thinking he's just convenient now that he's working for Adam and Adam feeling that Lysander might find a better prospect and just run away.
So, yes, this book was a bit angstier, but we got these glimpses of the longing they each felt, and how they were willing to go through great lengths to be together, which in that era wasn't easy.
There were other elements at play in the story, Lysander's dad and the abhorrent way he treats Adam, an old friend's interest in Lysander and a scandal (or two) that move the story along and kept my interest. I loved the setting, the language, Ms. Chambers' writing and especially Adam and Lysander. I really hope this isn't the last we'll be seeing of them, and perhaps Jonny and Perry, too? Pretty please?
Highly recommendable!
