BLURB

Tis the season to be jolly, but romance writer Matt Darcy is feeling anything but festive. With a pile of rejection letters as high as his latest manuscript, Matt is questioning whether his career as an author will ever take off. And while his perfect husband Cal has planned a week-long trip to a mountain chalet for Matt, Mrs. Mulroney, Mr. Banks, Tilly and Angus—so that everyone can be together and enjoy the lead-up to Christmas—Matt can only hope his feelings of worthlessness and self-doubt won’t ruin the trip.

But when a bump on the head knocks Matt out and he wakes up miles from the chalet, the journey he must undertake is not a trek through the snow, but an eye-opening insight into the lives of those he loves most if he, Matt Darcy, had never, ever existed.

Will Matt let his feelings of uselessness and self-doubt lead him forever into the Forest of Darkness… or will this Christmas open his eyes to the magical truth that it is indeed a wonderful life?

EXCERPT

Every day since we had moved into the lavish apartment building on Fifth Avenue I had taken the stairs. I would forever be grateful that I was on hand to help deliver Camilla’s baby the day we looked at the place and got stuck in the elevator, but what if next time the elevator stalled between floors it wasn’t a pregnant woman trapped with me? What if I was stuck in there with a serial killer or an asylum escapee or Roseanne Barr? It was a chance I was not willing to take. On the upside, the forced exercise was keeping me fit. On the downside, I have no idea where all my endorphins were going. Everybody says that exercise releases the same chemicals as the ones that bring you joy and happiness, like letting them loose to have some massive street party in your brain. Evidently my endorphins were all sitting in the library reading Sylvia Plath.

As I reached our floor and slid my keys into the lock, I could clearly hear two people whispering on the other side of the door.

“I think he’s coming,” one voice said.

“Take your position,” another voice dramatically replied. “The enemy approaches.”

“You got enough ammo?” said the first voice.

“Enough to send him back to hell in a handbasket.”

The not-so-secret conversation was followed by the not-so-quiet shuffling of feet on the floor, and I could only assume Angus and Mr. Banks were hiding behind the hall stand and the cloakroom door, ready to ambush me.

I gave a sigh of resignation, braced myself, then swung the apartment door open.

The second I set foot inside the apartment, a war cry rang out as a barrage of white socks—each pair folded up in a ball—came flying through the air at me with surprising force, thumping into my face, chest, stomach and crotch.

I jolted and staggered backward. “Jesus! Ow! What the fuck?”

“Aim for his nuts,” shouted Angus. “That’s his weak spot!”

“No prisoners!” cried Mr. Banks as though he were Lawrence of Arabia himself. “No prisoners!”

“Guys! Stop! Quit it now!” I shouted back, doing my best to shield my face and my balls at the same time. “What are you doing upstairs, anyway? We have rules.”

As their ammunition dwindled and my attackers ran out of socks to throw, Angus and Mr. Banks came out from their posts. “We told Paulina we wanted to greet you when you got home so we let ourselves up here,” Angus said.

“You call that a greeting?”

“Actually, it was more like practice for the snow fights we’re planning for the next week. If you think socks hurt, wait until you get hit in the nutsack by a snowball.”
