Virtual Book Tour: Demon on the Down-Low by EJ Russell (Guest Post+Giveaway)

Hello, everyone, and thank you for joining me on blog tour for Demon on the Down-Low, the third (and final) book in the Supernatural Selection trilogy! Follow along with the tour and comment for a chance to win the tour grand prize, a $25 Riptide gift card and your choice of either Single White Incubus or Bad Boy’s Bard. Winner chosen randomly at the end of the tour from comments across all tour stops.

About Demon on the Down-Low

After decades of unrequited love, this kangaroo will jump at the chance for a date. Any date.

Lovelorn kangaroo shifter Hamish Mulherne, drummer for the mega-hit rock band Hunter’s Moon, waited years for the band’s jaguar shifter bassist to notice him. Instead, she’s just gotten married and is in a thriving poly relationship. How is Hamish supposed to compete with that? But with everyone else in the band mated and revoltingly happy, he needs somebody. Since he can’t expect true love to strike twice, he signs up with Supernatural Selection. Because what the hell.

When Zeke Oz was placed at Supernatural Selection through the Sheol work-release program, he thought he was the luckiest demon alive. But when he seems responsible for several massive matchmaking errors, he’s put on notice: find the perfect match for Hamish, or get booted back to Sheol for good. The only catch? He has to do it without the agency’s matchmaking spells, and Hamish simply will not engage.

But Zeke starts to believe that the reason all of Hamish’s dates fizzle is because nobody in the database is good enough for him. And Hamish realizes that his perfect match might be the cute demon who’s trying so hard to make him happy.

Crossovers
As a member of the audience—whether for movies, TV, or books—I’ve always loved connections between stories. The Easter egg, the cameo, the “special guest star.” Yep. I’m there for ‘em every time.

“Blood Oath,” that episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine where Klingons from three different TOS episodes show up to kick ass with Dax? Hell, yeah! The (totally sanctioned) shout-out to Jordan L. Hawk’s Whyborne and Griffin series in Rhys Ford’s Sinner’s Gin books? Gimme more! All the snide Wolverine/Marvel MCU references in Deadpool? Love ‘em!

My Legend Tripping and Art Medium series have a crossover character in Marguerite Windflower, Psychic Counselor (two, if you count Hootie, her “associate”). But the Supernatural Selection trilogy was a little different because I knew I was writing in—and expanding upon—the Mythmatched universe from my Fae Out of Water series.

*Rubs hands together in glee.*

I’ve blogged before about how certain characters and plot points in Single White Incubus and Vampire With Benefits were sparked by Cutie and the Beast and The Druid Next Door. Demon on the Down-Low similar in that one of the co-heroes—Hamish Mulherne—played a significant role in Bad Boy’s Bard.

When I was writing BBB, Hamish’s hopeless crush on Tiff, the Hunter’s Moon bass player, was just a way for me to make Gareth take a harder look at his troubled relationship with Niall. I didn’t think about it going any further.

But as I was plotting the Supernatural Selection series, I realized I wanted each book to have significant ties to Fae Out of Water based on its position in the trilogy. Alun and David from CatB are important secondary characters in Single White Incubus. Bryce, from TDND, plays a major role in Vampire With Benefits. That meant that the crossover characters in the third book would be from BBB—and only one person really needed an upgrade to his love life: Hamish.

So I got the band back together and brought Hunter’s Moon into Supernatural Selection, but I deprived Hamish of any hope of Tiff “requiting” his love by not only marrying her off, but putting her in a poly relationship before the book opens.

*Adds evil cackle.*

To rub salt into Hamish’s wound, the major external event that’s taking place in Demon on the Down-Low is Mal and Bryce’s wedding (following on Mal’s proposal which Cas awkwardly witnessed in Vampire With Benefits). So not only is he the only member of Hunter’s Moon who’s not partnered up, he’s got to attend a wedding and endure even more evidence of how happy all his friends are. Or as he says:

All this love. It’s enough to make me hurl.
Hamish didn’t need love. Love did nothing but kick you in the bollocks. But a match? A partner? A mate?
Yeah. He could go for that. Because he was done being alone.

In other words, Hamish is the perfect client for Supernatural Selection, and couldn’t escape falling in love if his life—or his soul—depended on it. ;-)
