After his mother tragically dies and his deadbeat father goes off the rails, nineteen-year-old Micky is left to care for his disabled little brother, Flynn.
Juggling college, a dead end job and Flynn's special needs means Micky has to put his bad boy past behind him and be the responsible adult to keep his brother out of care. He doesn't have time for anything else in his life.
Until he meets Dan.
"Amazingly gritty and raw. This slice of life is so realistic it flays you." - Pride Publishing

Nineteen-year-old Micky O'Neill is struggling to keep people from finding out he's been taking care of his younger brother after kicking his deadbeat father to the curb. Going to school and starting a new job all while juggling with parenting an 8-year-old with special needs is not easy. But Micky refuses to give up, there's no way he will let them take away his brother.
Dan had dreams of being a teacher. He had never imagined he'd still be working in the grocers after all these years. They just keep promoting him and with that comes the money. When he sets eyes on the new hire, Micky, he knows he's in trouble. Hiding his attraction to the young man is nearly impossible and when he realizes his feelings are reciprocated things get complicated.
What I Loved: I honestly adored little Flynn. He was adorable and I loved his energy and the way he just embraced life. I could picture him so vividly and it made me smile.
I also loved the devotion Micky had for Flynn. He was fierce in his loyalty and refused to look at Flynn as a burden. You could tell he was willing to do anything for his brother.
What I Like: I really enjoyed the premise of the story. I'm always drawn to stories with kids and the different struggles an MC goes through to keep everything together.
What I Didn't Like: I was thoroughly disgusted with Flynn's school, the kids, parents and teachers. I'm not sure how things work over seas as compared to here but it just made me mad. I'm lucky, our school district is great and the school I work in is blessed with a wonderful group of teachers, administrators and support staff. We would never allow what was happening at Flynn's school to happen.
Flynn's so so-called friend" was a bully. The fact that his school would continue to allow them to interact without someone keeping an eye on them seemed a bit ridiculous. Obviously, I'm not implying that this type of thing doesn't happen in real life, I know it does, I just did not like it. Our support staff is amazing and problems like this are extremely rare. I hated that Flynn had to go through this. I wanted to pick him up and plop him down in my school.
I also wasn't sold on the relationship between Dan and Micky. I didn't feel their connection or the chemistry they were supposed to share. I actually found them a little awkward together. I also didn't feel like Dan was drawn to Micky because he wanted to really be a family with him and Flynn (let's face it, that's what he'd be signing up for) or if he just was attracted to Micky so he'll do what it takes to be with him. I honestly felt more enthusiasm from Flynn towards the two men than from them to each other.
Overall, I found this story just okay. I wasn't really a fan of either MC or their relationship. This is a serial so it ends without wrapping things up and I'm not sure I am interested in continuing it.

Author Bio
Studying at a West London university, she realised there was a whole city out there waiting to be discovered, so, much like Dick Whittington before her, she never made it back home and still endlessly searches for the streets paved with gold, slowly coming to the realisation they’re mostly paved with chewing gum. And the odd bit of graffiti. And those little circles of yellow spray paint where the council point out the pot holes to someone who is supposedly meant to fix them instead of staring at them vacantly whilst holding a polystyrene cup of watered-down coffee.
She eventually moved West to East along that vast District Line and settled for pie and mash, cockles and winkles and a bit of Knees Up Mother Brown to live in the East End of London; securing a job and creating a life, a home and a family.
Having worked in Higher Education for most of her career, a life-altering experience brought pen back to paper after she’d written stories as a child but never had the confidence to show them to the world. Having embarked on this writing malarkey, C F White cannot stop. So strap in, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride...
