Changing Lines is a new series from authors R.J. Scott and V.L. Locey. Both authors are hockey fans and that certainly is shown in this book. This book is very centered around what happens on the ice, which may have taken some of the attention away from the off ice stuff. I really liked both MC's. Tennant is young and comes from a family of hockey players. Both of his brothers are very successful on and off the ice. They live the perfect lives, with the perfect wives. Tennant is the baby of the family and has been bossed around by all of them most of his life. But, unknown to his family, he's been hiding that he was gay. The other MC, Mads, is a coach on the Railers' team but has been best friends with Tennant's oldest brother all their lives. Mads fought to become successful in hockey after some poor decisions as a teenager. But, his body failed him and now instead of playing, he's coaching. Mads is bi, and hasn't hidden it or brought it in the opening, it just is.
There was not a lot of on page development of Tennant and Mads' relationship which was disappointing. Their relationship and falling in love seemed to happen very quickly because we only witnessed important milestones in the relationship. I know with the history of the two men that love could happen quickly, it would have just been nice if that was shared with the reader. In this way, it seemed that the focus of the hockey games really took away from the relationship and the development of Mads and Tennant as a couple.
I had a lot of questions that were not answered. Mads became a father at 15 and was treated terribly by his son's grandfather. Where in the he** were Mads' parents? Why would they allow this to happen? Mads was underage so he couldn't have agreed to all the conditions set without a parent being involved. And, when Mads and Tennant's relationship was exposed to the team and management, there was no reaction. It seems there should have been some discussions. I did feel like the story wasn't finished, that there were unanswered storylines left open.
I loved the reaction of Tennant's family when he finally told them he was gay. Absolutely loved it! I loved both MC's, Tennant's family, and Ryker. There was a part where Ryker confronted his dad about his relationship that was absolutely hilarious and made me laugh out loud! I'm really looking forward to the next book in this series, but I hope we get to see more of the next couple's relationship development. Though I won't lie and say I won't feel cheated because I loved Tennant and Mads so much in this one.
