Inspiration
by Laura Baumbach
As a writer, I find inspiration for new stories and characters from many places, most of them random and unexpected. A turn of phrase, a handsome man, a threatening crisis, a loving gesture can all spark a story. It can be anything from a computer breach to a world disaster when I write a romantic suspense piece. I prefer action and mystery, so items that wake up my muse are usually daring and dangerous. Usually. This week, my inspiration came from an unusual place for me. It came from the sudden passing of a friend and colleague.
In the final week of June, A.C. Katt passed away - quietly, suddenly, unexpectedly - in her sleep. She was kind, giving person. Author of dozens of romances, ebook, print and audio versions thrilled and satisfied thousands of her readers month after month. She was prolific, disciplined and motivated as an author. Her readers devoured her series like they were chocolate, rich, satisfying and delicious. Her characters becoming like family members to them. She liked helping fellow authors. She was friendly and generous with her time at events, online and in person. A.C. Katt was a good person.
Generally, the death of a friend is a time of sorrow, reflection and darkness. When we regret our loss, focus on the void, large or small their passing has created, ponder the regrets we now have over things we didn’t take the time to do while that person was here with us. It can paralyze our thoughts and deeds. It can pull a shade of darkness over us, cloaking our actions and days in shadow. We feel a numbness that persists to take joy out of our lives. It can be crippling, even if short lived.
I have the benefit of not only years of wisdom (and I mean years), but of having experienced death many, many, many times. I’m a nurse, I worked decades in ICU and Emergency medicine. Death has been a familiar companion and I no longer fear it. While most my patients started out as strangers, in far too many cases, I grew to know them and care about them before their passing. Each touched me, nameless stranger, long cared for patient, or family member or friend, their passing marking me. My soul is covered in scars.
As a nurse, I learned that death wears a different face for each who finds it waiting. For some it was too soon, a life not yet lived fully, for some it as a blessing, a failing mind or failing body’s final release. Almost all left sorrow or pain behind them, leaving it to their friends and family – or caregiver, to experience.
For those that found a gentle release in its solemn embrace, I learned to let the sorrow touch me, but not to allow it to linger. Hold it, understand it for what it is, a step in life’s process, and then, let it go. And in that void left behind, fill it with the beauty of life, celebrate the uniqueness, and the joy that departed person gave to your life. Remember to appreciate ad enjoy the life surrounding you now. Let that be their gift to you. Recognize what they gave to your world, not what their passing took from it.
A.C. Katt gave me friendship, support, laughter and inspiration. My next paranormal story is dedicated to her indomitable spirit and creative mind. I hope to make her proud to have been my friend. If you are attending GRL in October, come see me. We’ll raise a glass to honor the joy A.C. Katt brought to our lives.
