A man without memories, and the cop who never gave up hope.

When he wakes up in hospital, the victim of a brutal beating, John Doe, has no memories of who he is or who hurt him. The cops can find nothing to identify him and he can't remember anything to help... except the name Ethan and one recurring place from his dreams. Three words, and they're not much, but it's a start. Crooked Tree Ranch.

Cop, Ethan Allens has never stopped searching for his brother and his brother's best friend who vanished. When a report lands on Ethan's desk that may give new leads he jumps at the chance to follow them up. The man he finds isn't his brother, but it's someone who could maybe help him discover what happened ten years ago.

What neither man can know is that facing the very real demons of the past could very well destroy any kind of future they may think they have together.

Twelve years ago Justin and Adam disappeared without a trace.  Justin's older brother Ethan never stopped searching for them and never gave up hope that they would someday come home.  When he gets a call saying they've found Adam it's a bittersweet reunion.  How can he resent the boy he once loved for being found instead of his brother? What happened to Adam and Justin?  How come Adam has no memory of his life the last 12 years?

I have to say this book had a completely different feel from the first book. This is a more serious subject matter so I didn't find myself flying through the pages the same way. Having said that, though, I definitely enjoyed both the story and the characters and as always I find RJ Scott's writing style to be smooth and well done.

Adam is, in my opinion, a complicated character because as much as I like him I had this bad feeling in the back of my mind about where his character was going to lead us in the story. What nefarious deed did he do that left him injured and Justin missing? And as the story goes along we get flashes of memories, nightmares and feelings of Adam's past.  We are discovering things at the same rate as Adam and therefore Ethan.  This was a great way to develop the story though because it made me anxious to see what was going to happen.

There are a few twists and turns throughout the story to help keep us guessing. Not to mention we get to see Nate and Jay and the others we've come to like and love at the Crooked Tree Ranch.  This is a bit of a slow burn romance, Ethan really wants to do right by Adam and while they have some history, it's all new to Adam and to Ethan who is now a different man.   They are very good together and I would love to see more of them in following books.

4 Stars!
