"Come on, silly
doggie, put some effort into it. Try to change." He was surprised when
Martin did sit down and closed his eyes. That was much more understanding of
his actual words than he had expected at this point. With two strides, he was
back at the wolf's side and hunkered down next to him. "It's not that
hard," he added softly and much kinder. "You have done it before.
Just picture yourself human. Hands, feet, skin."
A shiver ran through Martin as he hunched over in
concentration, his eyes screwed shut tightly.
"Don't try to force it," Roan continued
talking to him softly. He felt the urge to stroke the wolf's neck to make him
relax, but he knew that tactile contact like that would just be a distraction.
"Your human shape is there, you don't have to force it, just imagine
pulling it over like a favorite coat."
Betsy had gone completely silent. Roan didn't even
hear her breathe anymore. He could easily imagine how she was watching with
huge, hopeful eyes.
He banished that thought from his mind, concentrating
on Martin instead, trying to come up with something to make the shift easier
for him. He remembered how his father had coaxed him and his siblings into
changing to their human form by placing treats they really wanted into
containers they could only open with fingers. It had worked like a charm with
them, permanently hungry as they had been, but Roan doubted it would be any
help to Martin. He wanted to change, after all. He just couldn't.
Roan sensed how Martin struggled, but nothing happened.
With a tiny unhappy whine, Martin slumped and hung his
head. He looked defeated. Roan wrapped his arms around his thick neck and
pulled him close.
"Don't worry about it," he told the wolf in
a deep rumble, close enough to a purr to reassure. "You'll get there.
You'll get your human shape back. Keep trying. It just takes more time for you
to recover. You'll be fine."
