One look and he knew it was a long shot.

Ryan King is a movie star with a secret. Women fall at his feet for a chance, but that’s never been what he wanted. Broken hearted after helping his closest friend claim the love of his life, Ryan is searching for a distraction. One who can keep his secret.

Shannon O’Neil’s life has changed drastically in the last few years. He served as a Navy SEAL to escape his father’s scrutiny, but an injury forced him to reevaluate his choices. Now he runs a successful security firm. One that recently took a consulting job to train a group of actors for an upcoming movie.

The attraction is immediate but long-distance relationships have never worked for either. Still, they want to try. Navigating through their own family drama, and Ryan’s shooting schedule may prove too much of a burden.

4 Stars!

The Long Shot is book 2 in the Love Behind the Scenes series, and while it can be read as a standalone, which is what I did, we're introduced to several characters from the first book which was MF, so just be warned.

Ryan is a closeted actor and only a few ones know of his secret, mostly because he was in love with one of his best friends and he didn't want things to get weird, especially now that Luke finally found the love of his life. He's loyal and supportive of his best friend Raven and his brother Manny, helping them out as best he can. He's attracted to Shannon from the first time he sees him across a club and thinks he's straight. Little does he imagine that Shannon O'Neil, their new trainer for the movie, is bi and has been harboring a crush on Ryan for years. Once they realize that their attraction is reciprocated, things move forward fast, but there are several things happening in both their lives that might put a stop to their budding relationship.

I really liked Ryan and Shannon, they were flawed and sweet and fit very well together. They had great chemistry and even if it was pretty much insta-love, it worked for them. For this being Ms. Rivers first MM book, she did a great job portraying the connection, the passion and the hot sexy times that characterizes MM books.

For as much as I liked some of the secondary cast, namely Raven, Luke, Leona and even Ryan and Shannon's mothers, I couldn't say the same about Shelley, Shannon's sister, who I hated with the fire of a thousand suns. I found her to be manipulative and horrible, and no amount of half-assed apologies could make up for how she treated Shannon, and for how he allowed her to treat him.

While I don't mind reading standalone books that are part of a series, it's hard sometimes to connect with all the characters and their background and I felt a bit lost with all the characters introduced. Aside from that, in this case, I felt that a lot of page time was devoted to Ryan's brother and his relationship, and to Raven's stalker, and while we got some sort of resolution regarding Manny, I was a bit disappointed that we're going to have to wait to learn what happened with the stalker issue. It helps a little that the follow-up novella will also show us a bit more of how Ryan and Shannon are faring in the future, so I'll be waiting for that.

Overall, I think this was a solid first foray into the MM world by Brandy L. Rivers, it was entertaining and engaging, if you don't count Shelley (and I won't, Grrr!) and I'm already looking forward to reading both Ryan and Shannon's novella and Raven's story.
