Audiobook Reviews: Texas Heat, Texas Family and Texas Christmas (Texas Series, Books 3, 4 & 5) by RJ Scott

Texas Heat

Narrated by: Sean Crisden
Series: Texas (Scott), Book 3
Length: 4 hrs and 18 mins
Unabridged Audiobook
Release date: 05-04-17
Language: English

Against the backdrop of 20 half-naked models on DD land, and in the midst of fighting the oil establishment that just won't give Riley a chance, Texas Heat is the story of one hot summer in Texas with a Gay Rodeo, humor, angst, and a love between two men that just grows stronger every day.

Jack hires Robbie, a man recovering from a great loss, to be his right hand man. Meanwhile, Riley's mischievous photographer friend, Eli, decides the DD is the perfect backdrop for a cowboy themed model shoot. Eli has secrets not even Riley knows about but despite what he is hiding he falls in lust with Robbie at first sight. Everyone except Robbie can see how perfect Eli would be for him.

What happens when secrets spill and lies are discovered? And just how far will Riley and Jack go to play matchmaker?

Texas Heat is the third book in RJ Scott’s Texas series. This series must be read/listened to in order as it follows the lives of Riley and Jack Campbell-Hayes and their family. I’ve read and listened to this series many times and every time I fall in love with it more.

Nothing is simple in the lives of Jack and Riley and in this third book, that constant remains. I love each of these books and experiencing the family being built. Jack and Riley’s love and life is strong. In this book, you get to see them stand as a couple even more than the others. They’ve become more comfortable as a family of three and have grown into their father positions.

In this book, we get the addition of Robbie and Eli. Robbie is hired to work on the farm with Jack and Eli is an old college friend of Riley’s. This book not only focuses on Jack and Riley, but also Robbie and Eli. They both have their own hardships to overcome, but with a loving relationship like Jack and Riley around, both men are able to work through their history to find a life together. Though the soap opera drama in this book is less than the first, there is still plenty of drama.

Sean Crisden is a fantastic narrator that brings this story to life! Even when I read this story, I hear his voice narrating it in my head because it’s perfection! He is able to give each character distinctive voices and is consistent with the use. He has an enjoyable voice, keeps a great pace and is clear and concise is his narration. He conveys emotions through the characters and lets the focus be on the story and characters, not the narration.

If you’ve never listened to this audio, or read this series, I’d highly recommend it! Though I love both the books and audiobooks, my preference is the audiobook. It’s easy to fall into the story, shut out the outside world and just be part of the Campbell-Hayes family.

Overall: 5+++++++
Performance: 5+++++++
Story: 5+++++++

Texas Family

Series: Texas (Scott), Book 4
Length: 4 hrs and 19 mins
Unabridged Audiobook
Release date: 08-23-17
Language: English

Jack and Riley Campbell-Hayes begin a journey that will change their lives forever.

Set against the backdrop of the Double D, the cast of the Texas audiobooks face changes that won't leave a single one of them untouched.

Jack and Riley want to extend their small family of three. Their first choice is surrogacy with Jack as the father, and when all this begins smoothly both men can't help but contemplate at what point would things go wrong. After all, their lives are far from normal, and nothing is ever smooth.

Add a small four-year-old boy in foster care into the mix, and suddenly things become a whole lot more complica
ted.

Texas Family by RJ Scott is book 4 in the Texas series. I think you really have to read/listen to the whole series to get full enjoyment from this volume. Honestly, the first book is all roller coaster/soap opera worthy drama and every book that comes after it is the icing on top! Jack and Riley didn't have an easy beginning but I love how much stronger they become as a couple and through every book you can see how strong their love is.

The title of this book really tells you about this chapter in Jack and Riley's life. It's all about family. Both Jack and Riley have decided they want to have another child and to give Haley a sibling. But the focus of this book is not entirely on how that happens, there's so much more going on. Of course, Riley's having to deal with issues from his dead brother still; his sister-in-law has met someone; Eden and Sean are having difficulties; Beth's decided to have another baby; and of course, when Riley and Jack decide to have a child, they go big and end up with more than one. You know, just a typical day in the life of Jack and Riley Campbell-Hayes!

In preparation of listening to this book, I bought the first three audiobooks in the series and Sean Crisden is the narrator for all of them. I loved that there was one narrator for all four books, especially since I listened to them consecutively. The narrator did a fantastic job with this story and with the characters. There are a lot of characters in this story and I really felt that he did an excellent job of bringing the story to life and providing individual voices for all of the various characters. Sean Crisden has an easy-to-listen-to voice. He keeps a good pace, brings emotions into narrating, and doesn't have weird pauses or silence in his storytelling.

This series is one of my favorites, whether in print or audio. I absolutely love following a couple throughout their life like this series does and seeing the happiness build. And, what I absolutely love, is that this author doesn't make every book after full of angst and fighting between the MC's just to have angst in the story. She brings plenty of angst into the stories, but she allows Jack and Riley to remain strong and to draw closer to each other instead of turning on each other. I will definitely listen to this audio series over and over again!

Overall: 5 stars!
Performance: 5 stars!
Story: 5 stars!

e.

Texas Christmas is the fifth book in RJ Scott’s Texas series. This series must be read/listened to in order as it follows the lives of Riley and Jack Campbell-Hayes and their family. I’ve read and listened to this series many times and every time I fall in love with it more.

Nothing is simple in the lives of Jack and Riley and in this fifth book, that constant remains. I love each of these books and experiencing the family being built. Jack and Riley’s love and life is strong. I absolutely love that this follows the life of Jack and Riley and we get to see them grow as a couple. And with the addition of Max, they quickly become a family of six. And don’t think because Jack and Riley are settled into their lives and parents that they don’t still steam up the pages, they do!

In this book, we get the follow up with Robbie and Eli and how their relationship is continuing to grow. They have a home at the ranch and in the lives of Riley and Jack. We also learn more about Liam and his abusive past. We see Liam willing to explore his feelings with Marcus, despite his fear and the struggle each man has with this new relationship.

Sean Crisden is a fantastic narrator that brings this story to life! Even when I read this story, I hear his voice narrating it in my head because it’s perfection! He is able to give each character distinctive voices and is consistent with the use. He has a pleasant voice, keeps a great pace and is clear and concise is his narration. He conveys emotions through the characters and lets the focus be on the story and characters, not the narration.

I love that even though each book is a new addition to the soap opera, that the love remains constant. The drama comes from outside, not that the couples don’t have their differences, but they know how to handle each other and work through their issues. If you’ve never listened to this audio, or read this series, I’d highly recommend it! Though I love both the books and audiobooks, my preference is the audiobook. It’s easy to fall into the story, shut out the outside world and just be part of the Campbell-Hayes family.
