It doesn’t matter what Daniel says, or how much he needs Luke. Luke isn’t staying once everything is sold off. Surely Daniel can understand that what they have between them is just a two-week fling; there is no way it could be love.

The first three novellas of the Ellery Mountain series are set in Ellery, Tennessee and tell the stories of three best friends who find love in their small town. These books could be read individually, but I think you'd get more enjoyment if you read them in the appropriate order, especially because book 2 continues a storyline from book 1.
The Fireman and the Cop
Due to difficulties at his previous town, Max has accepted a job in Ellery working for the Mayor and volunteering at the fire department. He's immediately pulled into arson investigations that have started in Ellery, which has led to him meeting Finn, a local police officer. Finn continues to find himself in dangerous situations that Max is having to rescue him from, and they soon learn that someone is targeting Finn. Along the way Max and Finn began dating and fall in love, but the person targeting Finn isn't happy about that development and decides to get Finn back.
This had a lot of crazy packed into a novella! This was my favorite of the three novellas so far, because it didn't feel like the relationship between Max and Finn was rushed. Both Max and Finn were likable guys and this story was a great introduction to the Ellery Mountain series. It provided the background of the town, and introduced to Finn's friends who would have their own novellas. A novella about a fireman and a cop, how can you pass that up? You can't!

This had a lot of crazy packed into a novella! This was my favorite of the three novellas so far, because it didn't feel like the relationship between Max and Finn was rushed. Both Max and Finn were likable guys and this story was a great introduction to the Ellery Mountain series. It provided the background of the town, and introduced to Finn's friends who would have their own novellas. A novella about a fireman and a cop, how can you pass that up? You can't!

The Teacher and the Soldier
We met Daniel in the previous novella in this series, and knew a little bit about Luke's history. In this novella, we get a lot more background on Luke and his parents and what happened when Luke escaped the town. I really liked Daniel. He gave the impression of being a hard guy, but he wasn't. He wanted to provide services and supports to other veteran's who didn't have the same kind of support as himself. Daniel was also a great friend and son, and had a close relationship with his mom. I felt we really needed a longer book for this story, as most of it was taken up with Luke's depression. I really felt the last thing Luke needed was an instalove story. He needed counseling and time to get himself together, to be in a better place for a relationship. I didn't feel the connection between the two main characters.
Of all the stories, this one could have used more story. I didn't feel the relationship developing between Luke and Daniel, and really felt the instalove was just too soon. Plus, with Luke's history and his anger and hatred for the people in the town, it didn't seem like there was anything resolved, and then he was fine with just moving in with Daniel and settling down.
Rating: 3.5 stars
The Carpenter and the Actor
Through the first two books we have gotten to know Kieran. He is a very supportive friend, fun, always happy and has a great relationship with his dad. When Kieran gets nervous, he babbles, which was really cute. Kieran is working with Daniel to help him get the rehabilitation center started, though his main job is maintenance on Ellery Mountain, which is where he meets Jason. Kieran is attracted to Jason, but he's used to being the fun guy that no one is interested in a long term relationship with. Jason is hiding in Ellery after the death of his brother, but he isn't interested in long-term, he's an actor and has no interest in giving that up. Jason seemed to be a down-to-earth type of character, considering he was famous and wealthy.
Out of these three novellas, The Carpenter and the Actor is the one that you could read as a standalone. Both Kieran and Jason are likable guys, that will have to be open to a non-typical HEA. I didn't like that the men met and they were instantly talking about they were falling for the other. It's more believable if they had known each other previously, but when it's two strangers meeting, it's harder for me to believe their love happened immediately.
Rating: 4 stars
Overall, this is a really enjoyable series with several more stories to follow!
