Sometimes you must fall before you can fly free.

Despite having had a rough life, Seth has a big heart. After spending nearly ten years sleeping rough on the streets of New York, he’s managed to get himself freelance work and a place to live. But his new-found security is about to be torn apart, as the horrors of his past come back to haunt him in the worst possible way.

Dante was sent to watch over a young Seth when his mother died. As an angel, he had many rules to follow. The most important of which was to never fall in love—especially when it involves a human who is your charge. For the last ten years, Dante has kept his feelings for Seth hidden. That is until the night Seth’s past catches up with him.

When Seth is murdered, their destinies are changed forever. Feelings and emotions come to the surface, but will the rules that govern the afterlife keep Dante and Seth apart for eternity, or will they be able to find their happily ever after together?

Excerpt

Seth kept the last cup of coffee, now barely lukewarm, for the man who always sat alone, distant from the rest. There was something about him that mesmerized Seth in a way he couldn’t describe. It was probably the man’s eyes, which were a vivid shade of blue that pierced even the darkest night. He sat on the same bench every night, huddled in a tatty black trench coat.

“Seth.” Blue Eyes nodded his thanks as he wrapped his hands around the cup Seth handed to him.

“It’s not very warm, I’m afraid.”

Blue Eyes shrugged, never taking his gaze off Seth as he sipped the coffee. His dark hair fell to his shoulders in waves, framing his handsome face. His olive skin tone made him appear healthier than the rest, although Seth was reasonably sure that was deceptive. A short beard and mustache helped further define his broad chin and sculpted cheekbones. Seth thought to ask his name, but couldn’t convince the question to leave his lips.

He was always like that around Blue Eyes: tongue-tied and awkward. The man was incredibly gorgeous, and Seth couldn’t help but be physically attracted to him. Maybe in another lifetime, under very different circumstances, he would have the confidence to ask Blue Eyes more about himself; discover the mysteries sparkling in the depths of his eyes. But things were what they were and showing interest in the man was wholly inappropriate. So, instead of asking Blue Eyes his name, he uttered a goodbye and turned to go.

Dante was assigned as Seth's guardian angel since Seth was 15 and one of the main rules he had to follow was not falling in love with his charge. 10 years later, Dante is barely able to keep his feelings hidden seeing the caring, selfless man Seth has become. But Seth is hiding something as well, something that could endanger his life and if it catches up to him, not even Dante will be able to save him.

Seth had witnessed a man he only knew as "The Doctor" murder someone and captured it on film. When he's sent to cover the news of the new head of the local hospital, it turns out it's none other than the man he's been hiding from. The man has Seth kidnapped and then he kills them. Now, Seth as a ghost needs to decide what he wants to do, move on from this plane or find a way to stop the Doctor from killing more people.

This book was very different than I expected. For one, the angels' powers were very limited and they were subjected to the archaic rules of a council that didn't care much for love. There wasn't a heaven or hell, per se, either, and the deceased person chose which way they would go. It was all very intriguing.

I really liked Dante and Seth and I thought they had great chemistry, I guess it was a little too sweet sometimes, although it was undeniable that they fit well together and the sex scenes were passionate and loving.

While the romance portion was sweet, it balanced out with the Doctor plot line, which I found interesting. The Doctor was an evil man/witch and I enjoyed reading how they managed to bring him down with the help of an undercover cop, Cal. I really wouldn't mind reading a book with Cal as one of the MCs and maybe one with Julian. They were fascinating characters with lots of potential. The only one, other than the Doctor and his goons, that I despised was Killian, one of Dante's fellow angels and his otherwise lover, who took his petty jealousy a little too far.

Overall, this was a fairly entertaining story, with a very original take on angels and ghosts and a seamless collaboration for T.N. Nova and Colette Davison. I'll be looking forward to more in the series!

4 stars

I was not sure what exactly to expect with this book and I will admit I was a little nervous after reading the blurb. I was not sure how I would feel about a MC dying in the book, but after finishing it, this book was so much more than that.

The entire concept of this story was very original. The author did a great job of world-building and creating a setting that was interesting and unique. Seth and Dante were both easy to like characters and really sweet with each other. I will say there was a little bit of an overload in sweetness between the two of them, but I still enjoyed this story.

I liked that the story did not solely focus on Seth and Dante, but also the unsolved problem of Seth and the Doctor. It kept things interesting and had me eager to see how things were going to play out. Knowing that this is book one in the series, I wonder if we will get a story with Cal or even Julian in the future!
