A Secret to Kill for by T.N. Lowe is the first book in the Secret and Lies series and the first I’ve read from this author and it won’t be the last!

I had read the synopsis for this book so I had a general idea of what it was about, but that no way prepared me for what I was going to experience when I read this book! For the most part, I really liked Erin, even when she lost herself for a little bit, she was strong. I didn’t understand her willingness to put up with her mom’s behavior. She could have gotten the same type of job, minus the BS, from any other similar type of business. I liked that the story started from when she had it all, then when she lost it all and had to figure everything out. I felt like the reader really got to build a connection with Erin as she tried to figure out her life when she’d lost her dreams.

The author did a fantastic job of writing small-town life. Sometimes when a character from a city moves to a small area, the author does a disservice to the character, the small town and the reader by the way it’s portrayed. This author did not do that. Erin struggled with the change, as would anyone who isn’t used to small-town life. But I loved the building of relationships between Erin and the town. And those relationships were so important when things from D.C. follow her and she finds a community and friends who will stand with her. Interestingly, this is not just a crime drama/mystery book, there’s a romance thrown in with a nice HEA type ending for Erin and I enjoyed that storyline as well.

The one reason I didn’t give this book 5 stars, is the mountain lions. I get it, it was a glorious moment and I loved it, but, what’s the likelihood that they attack one person but not the vulnerable person on the ground? As much as I thought he got exactly what was coming to him, I also rolled my eyes and thought, no, don’t ruin this perfect story with this. And as for who the killer is, I suspected him shortly after his introduction to the story.

For anyone who loves a good thriller/mystery/crime drama story with strong female leads, you need to read this one! I loved this book and can’t wait to read the next one in the series. The book engaged me from the beginning and I couldn’t put it down!
