Deaf since childhood, Sebastian Armitage had a promising musical future until his dreams were shattered when he transformed at twelve years old. In a world where enhanced humans are terrorized and imprisoned, his life shrinks around him even more as he suffers the torment of his father’s experimental research to enable him to hear.
Gray Darling—struggling with the scars left by his experience in Afghanistan—agrees to provide short-term personal protection when anonymous threats escalate into assault on those closest to Seb.
As the lines between protection and attraction blur, Gray and Seb can’t ignore the intense feelings drawing them together. But secrets and betrayals might prove deadly, unless Gray is willing to risk it all. And Seb must find the strength to make his own future and sing his own song…
4.5 Stars!
Gray Darling is surprised when his friend and boss at Rawlings Security gives him a job protecting 20-year-old Sebastian Armitage. Seb who lives with his father is an enhanced, with as it seems, a lack of abilities. Deaf since he was four, Seb happens to be a very talented pianist and musician. But Seb has been receiving threatening letters and it’s become obvious that he requires protection after his music teacher is assaulted.
Gray intends to do everything he can to ensure Seb is safe and then, as always, move on. But it quickly becomes obvious that Seb needs more than just protecting from an outside threat. Something is very wrong about the way Seb is always sick and undergoing tests and surgeries. Gray will now have to protect Seb from things much closer to home. In the meantime, though, he will also have to protect their hearts.
I love this series, it’s fun and exciting and generally full of action. Guarding his Melody differed from the previous books with only a minimum amount of true action. However, it was quite enjoyable and honestly, I loved both Gray and Seb. I wished we could’ve gotten to see them interact with characters from the previous stories but other than that, this was definitely a win.
I think the pairing of Gray, an ex-Special Ops turned Personal Security Specialist who happens to be human and an Enhanced yet Deaf Seb was great. The two had good chemistry but it was a slow burn which made it much more endearing. I loved how Gray treated Seb right from the start and how Seb could’ve been the clichéd spoiled rich brat who fought having a “babysitter”. He wasn’t though, he followed direction and really seemed like he cared about his own safety.
I liked the secondary characters we were introduced to as well and I hope we might get to see them in future books of their own. I am not ready to see this series come to an end so I’ll be sitting here with my fingers crossed. Maybe if I’m really lucky we will get to see more of Talon and Gael, Jake and Finn.
Overall, I definitely recommend Guarding His Melody!
