Synopsis of A Ferry of Bones & Gold:

When the gods come calling, you don’t get to say no.

Patrick Collins is three years into a career as a special agent for the Supernatural Operations Agency when the gods come calling to collect a soul debt he owes them. An immortal has gone missing in New York City and bodies are showing up in the wake of demon-led ritual killings that Patrick recognizes all too easily from his nightmares.

Unable to walk away, Patrick finds himself once again facing off against mercenary magic users belonging to the Dominion Sect. Standing his ground alone has never been a winning option in Patrick’s experience, but it’s been years since he’s had a partner he could trust.

Looking for allies in all the wrong places, Patrick discovers the Dominion Sect’s next target is the same werewolf the Fates themselves have thrown into his path. Patrick has been inexplicably attracted to the man from their first meeting, but desire has no place in war. That doesn’t stop Patrick from wanting what he shouldn’t have. Jonothon de Vere is gorgeous, dangerous, and nothing but trouble—to the case, to the fight against every hell, and ultimately, to Patrick’s heart and soul.

In the end, all debts must be paid, and Patrick can only do what he does best—cheat death.

Magic, murder, and mayhem! You won’t want to miss the first book in a brand new, pulse-pounding m/m urban fantasy series!

Teaser:

“Don’t let the Fates take control of your life, Jono. Marek doesn’t have a choice, but you do,” Patrick said quietly.

Jono reached out and trailed his fingers along the edge of Patrick’s jaw, his touch warm, like it always was. “Guess we’re just gonna have to murder the fuck out of the Dominion Sect bastards together then, won’t we?”

Patrick was reminded of a lesson learned the hard way in the field—rules of engagement were for people who were never desperate.

Must be why I’ve always been a rule breaker, Patrick thought, before saying, “You know our chances are shit, right?”

“Can’t be much worse than waking up in hospital after a bad car crash with the werevirus running through your veins.”

“Didn’t take you for an optimist.”

“I can be with the right motivation.”

The filthy look Jono shot him made Patrick wish they were alone in his apartment with nothing to do tonight but fuck. Except there was a plan in the works that involved saving a city and time wasn’t on their side.

5 Stars!!!

I'm a huge fan of urban fantasy books. The combination of paranormal and fantasy in a contemporary setting makes it somewhat easier for me to relate to the story and A Ferry of Bones & Gold is a particularly great one. The world-building alone was amazing. Ms. Turner managed to integrate this world where gods, vampires, werecreatures, mages, etc. interact with humans in a realistic way and give enough background information regarding past events without it being overwhelming or taking the main focus from the plot.

The story is told mostly from Patrick Collins's POV, with a few chapters from Jono's (our hero's love interest) perspective. Patrick is fantastic, witty, sarcastic, stubborn, strong, self-deprecating and much more than I expected him to be. He'd been through so much all his life, first with his mother's murder and his father's betrayal and then practically being on his own since he was eight-years-old, being subjected to the whim of the gods for what he needed to do.

Jono was my favorite of the two. He was just so steadfast and supportive and just there when Patrick needed him. He could manhandle Patrick when and if he needed it, or just lend him a shoulder to lean on. His backstory is heartbreaking as well, and I will confess that I shed a few tears that Jono had finally found his pack at last. He deserved that.

The attraction between the two was swift and instant, but that doesn't mean that this is instalove. Yes, they act up on their attraction, but neither of them is thinking about love, at least not yet. Loyalty and affection is more than enough to start building their bod and of course, it doesn't hurt that the chemistry between them is off the charts and the sex scenes were hot, hot, HOT! But I also adored the tender, sweet moments, and the banter and the way they just seemed to fill that void that their pasts had left them with.

The secondary cast was just as amazing as the main characters. Good, bad, evil, they all served a purpose and were there for a reason and didn't feel superfluous. My favorites were Nadine, Marek, Emma and Sage, and Hermes made me laugh every time he was in a scene. I'm really intrigued by Patrick's old captain, Gerard, and I hope we get to see more of him in the next book. I wasn't particularly fond of the Greek gods or the way they seemed to toy with Patrick's life at will. And I hated Ethan, although I was a bit disappointed with that part of the story. I wanted a bit more.

Overall, I loved this book to bits! I can't wait for the next one. Everything from the world-building to the characters to the romance, the fighting scenes, the masterful way the author wove Greek, Egyptian and Norse mythology into the story, and above all, the writing which brought it all together, were top-notch. Highly recommendable!
