Hi there! My name is EJ Smyth and I write MM romance in all forms, from contemporary to fantastical. Today I’d like to talk about my favorite superpower. No, seriously.
You’d think for somebody who loves writing about the supernatural, this wouldn’t be hard. But it really is! My first thought was I’d like to have the power to kill whoever I want to. Like the kid in Death Note. Yes, I’m that dark at times. There are people in this world I would love to get rid off sooner rather than later.
Except I’m also a strong believer in karma, and that absolute power corrupts absolutely. So no, I don’t want that power after all.
I don’t want the power of flight either, because I get dizzy when I step on a chair. Flying would be wasted on me.
Seeing the future? No, definitely not. Nobody every believes you until it’s too late. That’s such a useless power.
Super-strength? Maybe. But what would I do with that? Lift heavy things? We got machines for that.
Invisibility? Other than sneaking into changing rooms, what good is that? I’m not a fifteen-year old boy, last time I checked. Although my son thinks this would be an awesome power!
Communicating with the dead? I get sick of talking to the living, never mind ghosts…
You see my dilemma?
There is one superpower I could imagine would be useful. Being able to materialize wherever you want to be. Travel distances in a flash. Imagine: instead of waiting for hours in overcrowded airports, then squashed into saggy airplane seats with no space to move, breathing chemical-laced air until you’re nauseous, you’d just imagine where you’d like to be, and whoosh, you’re there.
It gives me an idea for the hero in a story. All it needs is a personal cost to him, because nothing ever comes free. Maybe he never quite arrives exactly where he wants to be? Maybe he’s always a foot out? Maybe traveling like that leaves him drained and weak as a kitten for thirty minutes? Maybe he can only do it if he stays celibate for a week beforehand? Hmmmm, wheels are turning….
Over to you! What might the consequences be for him in exchange for his superpower? Or maybe he could have another awesome superpower at a cost? Let me know!

Author Bio
Hi there! My name is EJ Smyth, I live in Frankfurt, Germany and I’m passionate about romance. Not luffy-duffy romance, but stories with other elements mixed in. Paranormal romance, romantic thrillers, gay romance, if it’s got two difficult characters finding each other, I’m on board!
I write at my living room table, usually covered with folded laundry because I couldn’t be bothered to tidy before sitting down. And my kids are teenagers, so not much help there either <eye roll>. I do love having them around and I’ve gotten used to writing with a background noise of Grand Theft Auto and teenage histrionics. Maybe that’s why I prefer writing action scenes over descriptive settings! Except for the 18+ scenes which I have to write in a separate room, because, well, embarrassing…
I’m currently working on a series of short stories Keith is Awesome about a young man exploring his sexuality. Not something I’ve ever written before but the research alone was quite a bit of fun Check out my Pinterest account to see my inspiration. I love to talk to my readers, online and offline, so please feel free to drop me a line!
