He doesn’t realize that as Danny embarks on a successful modeling career and begins dating, Danny feels empty, longing for something—or someone—just beyond his reach: a shadow, a presence he despairingly believes forever lost to him.
When brutality and violence threaten Danny again, Damien must make a decision—risk revealing himself to Danny, or leave Danny to his fate.

When Danny slit his wrists and ends up in the hospital no one can imagine the domino effect that would occur.
Damien has spent a long time embracing the darkness that flows through him. As a vampire, he easily can take what he wants anytime he wants to. But he can't bring himself to hurt Danny as he lay in his hospital bed. Instead, he vows that he will help the boy.
With a cruel priest and an evil father conspiring to kidnap Danny and send him to conversion camp, Damien is forced to do what he can to save him. But the danger doesn't just stop there for Danny. Damien finds himself silently and secretly watching over him to keep him safe, eventually realizing that his absence from Danny's life is causing him pain.
I enjoyed the story of Damien, a vampire who finds he can't continue to live the dark and solitary life he's been living for so long. He's not a brooding, nonviolent type vampire we see so much. He's truly inhuman. He hunts and kills people and he is not always nice (to anyone other than Danny).
He, however, is great with Danny and he truly wants him to be happy and to be happy with himself. He takes care of those he loves or cares for and it gives him some of the humanity he is lacking. Danny has been indoctrinated into believing himself not worthy, a bad person, basically trash by his father and he needs someone who will help him see himself as he really is. This is a great job for Damien.
I did find the book sometimes confusing, though. It switches to various POV's throughout the entire story and one minute it will be Damien then the next Danny then the priest or his mother or sister or a nurse. It could be too much at times.
Other than that it was an enjoyable story and I will check out this author again.
