Synopsis
This is an intense page-turner, a gut-punch twist-filled story about a woman who has confidence in herself, believes she's a good judge of character, and has filled her life with people she can trust. She's right, but she's also very, very wrong. Readers will have a time of it trying to decide who to watch closest.

I read the synopsis for Hard Focus and immediately had to read the story. It was not what I expected, at all! I still enjoyed it but the synopsis makes it sound like there was mystery and intrigue with Connie trying to find out what was going on with her boyfriend, that was not my experience.
Connie is the female type of character I like to read about. She knows her mind, she knows her worth and she knows what she’s not willing to put up with. Once she got a picture of her boyfriend, and didn’t like what she saw, she was done. There was no trying to justify or excuse his actions. She never believed she had to have a boyfriend in her life, so she wasn’t settling. I liked that about her! I did question the weirdness of her never looking her boyfriend’s name up on the internet. She works for a law firm and her dad is a police officer, who doesn’t look someone up online?
I’m not going to say what the “secret” is about the boyfriend, which would give away what the story is about. I will say that I remember when I was a teenager and the real story in this book happened. I remember how shocked I was that the law allowed this to happen to victims and gave them so little power. I loved how the author handled this sensitive subject.
I really enjoyed the writing and story told. I liked Connie and all the characters that surrounded her life. There was nothing to figure out, for me. The boyfriend was creepy and weird from the beginning and never gave off a great, or good, guy vibe. I liked Cole and thought he seemed like a great guy once more information was given about him.
This was an interesting story that sucked me in once I started reading. There’s a little mystery with the way everything happens in the beginning, there’s a lot of crazy that happens with Connie, but it’s all resolved nicely.
Rating: 4 stars

Author Bio
Raised in the south, MariaLisa learned about the magic of books at an early age. Every summer, she would spend hours in the local library, devouring books of every genre. Self-described as a book-a-holic, she says “I’ve always loved to read, but then I discovered writing, and found I adored that, too. For reading … if nothing else is available, I’ve been known to read the back of the cereal box.”
A hockey fan, hiker, gamer, and single mom of a special needs son, she embraces her inner geek and has been working in the tech field for a publishing company for a couple decades.
Music is a driving passion, and she says, “I love music of nearly any genre — jazz, country, rock, alt rock, metal, classical, bluegrass, rap, hip hop … you name it, I listen to it. I can often be seen dancing through the house in the early mornings. But I really, REALLY love live music. My favorite thing with music is seeing bands in small, dive bars [read: small, intimate venues]. If said bar [venue] has a good selection of premium tequila, then that’s a plus!”
