The second book in the Jake Carrington series is All the Hidden Sins. Unlike the first book, this is more romance than police procedural. Most of the good feelings I had for Jake in the first book were lost in this one. Though the first story was told from multiple viewpoints, it was still mostly Jake’s story. This one is told from Jake’s viewpoint also, but quite a bit is told by Kyra, a character that I hated. She was a whiny, self-centered, hateful, disgusting person and was way too much of this book for me to enjoy it. And, Jake’s continuing pursuing of her, made me think less of him.

This book follows Kyra as she gambles, as she commits crimes while justifying herself, and acts as the mother done wrong while accepting no responsibility for what a horrible person she is. It also follows along with Jake as he’s investigating crime while trying for a relationship for Kyra but claiming he’s still in love with Mia.

I had expectations coming into this book since I loved the first one so much, and it definitely wasn’t what I expected. I have never wished for the death of a character more than I wished for Kyra’s. But, just like Jake showed poor choices by dating Chloe in the first book, he showed extremely poor choice in his pursuing of Kyra, who didn’t show much interest in dating him, even while doing so.

I’ll still consider reading the next book in the series, though I don’t know that Jake can be redeemed after this one. I thought the first book with just a side of romance was perfectly done so this one surprised me and not in a good way. If you’re going to read this series, you really need to read it in the appropriate order. The characters are introduced and continued on, storylines continue and you get a feel for the characters in the first book. And, I’m sure plenty of people will enjoy reading a character that you love to hate. I mean, there was no love. I was pretty much wishing for Kyra’s death within seconds of her introduction. Where’s a good serial killer when you need him, lol ;)

The victim was bludgeoned, stripped, and left for dead. Shanna Wagner deserves justice—and there’s no better cop than Lieutenant Jake Carrington to find her killer. The brutality of the crime reminds Jake of his sister’s murder seventeen years ago, and the remorseless man responsible, now up for parole.

Then another woman is killed—and Jake goes dangerously close to the edge. He’ll have to face his personal demons and focus his formidable skills if he hopes to stop a vicious murderer from striking again—and hold on to his career, and his life . . .

The first book in the Jake Carrington series, If I Fail, is very much a police procedural book with a small side of romance. Typically, the first book in a series can be overwhelming with information for me but I didn’t feel that with this one. Jake and his partner in the Homicide department, Louie, work their cases and solve murders. They had multiple cases going on during this first book and I found that really enjoyable. The writing kept you engaged and involved in the cases and character’s lives.

This book was told from multiple viewpoints which can be a little difficult but was mostly Jake’s. Not only did Jake have several ongoing cases, a promotion, a new romance, stalking by an old romance, but the man who killed his sister is up for parole. There is a lot going on in this book but it never felt like too much to me. The second half of the book really did focus on solving cases which I really enjoyed. I felt like the author really captured the police procedure without taking shortcuts. The author let the characters work the case and that is so important in police procedural books!

I really liked the characters in this book. I thought even though Jake was supposed to be a player, he came across as a nice guy who wasn’t out to hurt anyone. He cared about others and wasn’t a jerk. I loved the relationship between he and Louie’s family, and especially Louie’s children.

Before you jump into reading this, keep in mind, this is not a romance book. There is not a HEA ending for the romance part of this book. This is a police procedural that follows a main character who dates. If you enjoy police procedures, this is definitely one you want to read! It’s well-written, engaging and just pulls you into the story!

A self-described tough blonde from Brooklyn, Marian Lanouette grew up as one of 10 children. As far back as she can remember, Marian loved to read. She was especially intrigued by the Daily News crime reports. Tragically, someone she knew was murdered. The killer was never found. Her Jake Carrington thrillers are informed by her admiration for police work, her experience in running a crematorium, and her desire to write books where good prevails, even in the darkest times. Marian lives in New England with her husband.
