What happens when “nothing serious” turns into something more complicated?

Mark O’Brien is finally being honest with himself. His relationship with Rachel is over and he’s moving out of the home they’ve shared for six years. They get along, but he can’t fix a relationship when the person he’s with is the wrong gender.

Jamie Robertson, one of the removal men, is huge and ridiculously gorgeous, and Mark is smitten at first sight. When a cardboard box splits, revealing items of a personal nature that Mark never wanted anybody to see, he’s mortified. But it sparks the start of a beautiful friendship with benefits.

As Jamie initiates Mark into the joys of gay sex, the two men get increasingly close and “nothing serious” turns into something rather important to both of them. But communication isn’t their strong point. Will either man ever find the courage to be honest about his feelings?

I love a good gay-for-you or newly out themed book. I am compelled by the angst and struggles of the characters around making such a major life change, usually giving me all the feels. The concept, newly out Mark moving out of the home he shared with this long-time ex-girlfriend after coming out meets his mover Jamie (who’s out and proud) and they agree on a friends-with-benefits arrangement, was intriguing. Unfortunately, I found this book to be rather superficial, glossing over areas that could have warranted a deeper dive (e.g., Mark’s family, Jamie’s dyslexia). It was low-angst, low emotion and somewhat redundant (I think it’s more than FWB, does he feel the same?, will it be over if I tell him?). On the upside, the MCs had great chemistry. Their sexual scenes were HOT. But, I felt like they built in almost a formulaic way - first some heavy petting, then frotting, then...

Honestly, the title sums up the book in my opinion - Nothing Serious. It’s a low-angst, low emotion, low stress read. Sometimes that’s exactly what we need...

Nothing Serious is a stand-alone by Jay Northcote. Mark is late coming out. After living with his girlfriend for 9 years, he decides to come clean. While moving out, he meets Jamie who is there to help his brother move Mark's things. They decide to start up a friends-with-benefits type arrangement to help Mark explore his sexuality.

Mark comes off as a smart and somewhat geeky older man. While knowing he was gay, he stayed with his girlfriend who he met at university for 9 years because it was easier. After a while, he decides life is to short and comes out. He is new and inexperienced in the world of gay sexuality. Lucky for him, while young, Jamie knows what he is doing. Jamie was sweet. He treats Mark very well and despite being the younger participant in the relationship, I often forgot he was.

This was a very quick read. It was a decent book to read while fighting through a book hangover but it was not totally a book I would normally read. The age gap was nice though. I am not fond of friends-with-benefits relationships but this book was very predictable. We all know they will end up together.

Jay lives just outside Bristol in the West of England. He comes from a family of writers, but always used to believe that the gene for fiction writing had passed him by. He spent years only ever writing emails, articles, or website content.

One day, Jay decided to try and write a short story—just to see if he could—and found it rather addictive. He hasn’t stopped writing since.

Jay writes contemporary romance about men who fall in love with other men. He has five books published by Dreamspinner Press, and also self-publishes under the imprint Jaybird Press. Many of his books are also available as audiobooks.
