People’s Art on Stephen’s Green
There are worse was to spend a dry and sunny Sunday afternoon than exploring the artists displaying their work on the railings surrounding Stephen’s Green. On average six ‘People’s Art’ weekends take place in that location every year, and they provide artists with a wonderful opportunity to display their work to a larger audience than they might otherwise reach.
I have to admit that I’m not sure I would be persistent enough to chance the always unpredictable Irish weather if I had works of art to display. I tend to agree with Xander when he reflects:
“Besides, displaying art in the open air in Ireland is a nightmare most of the time. Today may be sunny, but most days you spend more time covering and uncovering your work than you do selling it. What’s more, this time of year sunny doesn’t equal warm. You could freeze your balls off standing still all day while waiting for potential, but more than likely elusive, buyers.”
But when the weather does cooperate, looking at original art while strolling in the sunshine, probably with buskers playing music in the background, can be a pure delight. And because Stephen’s Green is located right in the centre of Dublin, this artistic treat can easily be combined with a shopping spree, visits to museums, or just a leisurely walk through the hustle and bustle of Dublin, if that takes your fancy.
As for the quality of the art on offer on those railings…. I guess that is pretty much a matter of personal taste. I’ll post a link to a YouTube video shot during a ‘People’s Art on Stephen’s Green’ weekend below and leave it up to you whether or not you agree with Troy’s sentiments about what’s on offer.

After a lengthy brunch, they’d taken their time walking along the outside of Stephen’s Green, studying the art work attached to the railing surrounding the park. The mild temperature combined with hazy sunshine had brought the crowds. A trio of buskers played cover versions of popular songs inside the park, giving the pleasant day an almost festive atmosphere.
“Right?” Troy laughed out loud when Lorcan perfectly worded his own sentiments. “But I guess that’s what you have to expect with events like this where everybody who imagines themselves an artist can participate.” He stared at a display of what looked to him like drawings created by a rather incompetent two-year-old. “Mind you, what looks like a talentless waste of paper to us may well be somebody else’s idea of beauty.”

The urge to write came as a surprise. The realisation that people might enjoy her words was a shock to say the least. Now that the writing bug has well and truly taken hold, Helena can no longer imagine not sharing the characters in her head and heart with the rest of the world.
Having left the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam for the peace and quiet of the Irish Country side she divides her time between reading, writing, long and often wet walks with the dog, her part-time job in a library, a grown-up daughter and her ever loving and patient husband.
