Sweet tale that tests a relationship and makes it stronger, seemingly against the odds.

This tale features an established couple whose relationship that is seemingly already tested a little by one's trauma and the other's lack of hearing, is further tested when a child comes into their lives...and one embraces her potential future with them wholeheartedly, and the other has quite the opposite feelings.

It's very realistically written, with both guys full of emotions, both positive and negative. I think that if either had clammed up, it might have lead to the end of them, despite little Sophie's sweetness. I tried to put myself in the not-so-keen guy's position, as this is a major, major decision, especially when the subject has never come up before, but in the end, I think I had a lot of sympathy with both guys, actually.

What I loved was the turnaround in this, which in some ways was very slow and very gradual, and was just one decent person responding to an innocent child's needs, but then, when an element threatened what the trio was starting to build, the instincts that came out were amazing. It was as if paternal instincts had been let loose, rawr!

The tale ends with these guys' lives enriched by Sophie, and showing compassion for someone connected to her, who'd gone about things in the wrong way when feeling threatened. I also loved the sense of family in this tale, which felt entirely natural.
