Promo Tour ~ Hiatus by LA Witt ~ (Review, Excerpt + Exclusive Excerpt)

Blurb:

Three's a disaster when things come unraveled.
Rock star Nate Keller is on top of the world, but his headlining tour has one drawback. It keeps him away from his boyfriends, Theo and Cameron, for weeks at a time. Yet after four-and-a-half years—and a lot of hard work—the trio is still going strong.
But then Cam comes to visit with devastating news. After seventeen years together, he and Theo have agreed to a trial separation. Nate tries desperately to fix his lovers' broken relationship, but there's only so much he can do from the road.
At home, Cam tries to carry on, but feels like his whole life is spiraling out of control. Theo struggles to cope with the split as his depression worsens. They're both spinning their wheels, quickly losing hope they can keep it together—and keep the man they both still love.
Desperate, Nate drops everything in a last-ditch attempt to pull their trio back together before they hit rock bottom. Except their love could already be shattered beyond repair.
Warning: Contains two men who must face how broken they are before they can fix their failing marriage, and the man who loves them both—but doesn't know how to save them.

“The Riverside Hotel, please.”

The cab driver punched it into his GPS, turned on the meter, and pulled away from the fairgrounds. The enormous parking lot had mostly cleared out, but there were still a few people making their way back to their cars, so I kept my baseball cap pulled over my eyes. As much as I adored my fans, and still couldn’t believe they’d recognize me—never mind mob me—I had somewhere else I needed to be tonight.
In my lap, I turned on my phone and texted my boyfriend, Cameron.

Leaving now. Be there in 20.

Then I turned the phone over and grinned in the darkness. Cam and his husband, Theo, had flown in this afternoon. I hadn’t seen them in three weeks—not since they’d met me like this at another hotel in another city—and I’d been climbing the walls every night. Skyping, texting, and e-mailing only did so much to make up for the lack of physical contact while I was out on tour. For the last seven months, I’d been on the road, only occasionally dropping back into LA, and in between, seeing them whenever they could meet me. Seven months down, at least five to go, assuming more dates weren’t added again.

Technically, we had an open relationship. Especially while I was out on the road, they had no problem with me hooking up with other guys. The same went for them. The only rules were we had to use condoms with other people, and with each other if we’d been with anyone else.

In practice, though, they were monogamous except for me, and despite the option being open, I hadn’t touched anyone. My band thought it was hilarious—now that we’d actually made it big and could act like the rock stars we’d always thought we were, I was practically celibate. Go figure.

But I didn’t want anyone else. For the last four and a half years, the only men I’d touched were the two who’d welcomed me into their bed and their marriage. I was one lucky bastard too. They were sweet, generous, and both were dynamite between the sheets.

Didn’t hurt that they were gorgeous too. They were different, and yet somehow complemented each other. Fair-skinned Cam, who never managed to get any color despite living in Los Angeles. Theo, who could tan just looking at a photo of a beach. They both worked out and looked the part, and even though they’d long ago left the world of high-powered investment banking, they still looked that part too. Theo kept his dark hair short and professional. Cam looked studious and serious whether or not he had on his glasses. Small wonder they’d caught my eye that first night, since they’d both been wearing shirts and ties.

I shivered. God, those two were the reason business attire had been invented.
My phone buzzed. I turned it over, and Cam had written back.

Rm 1128. See you soon.

I put the phone down again and rolled my stiff shoulders. I was seriously tempted to ask him for a massage tonight, but damn it, he hadn’t come here to work. He and Theo were here so we could fuck each other senseless, which would tide us over until the next tour stop where they could meet me.

I quickly swiped at my eyes—not breaking down now, goddammit—and glanced at Nate. Still asleep. Good. He couldn’t afford to lose sleep while he was on tour. He’d found out the hard way on his first tour that lack of sleep plus too much stress meant he’d pick up the first microbe that came along, and then he’d push through until pneumonia set in or his voice gave out—whichever came first. He didn’t need to be hospitalized again.

Guilt gnawed at my gut. Dropping the separation bomb on him probably wouldn’t help. But when we’d started this three-way relationship, we’d all vowed to be completely open and honest with each other. No secrets. Theo and I had already bent that rule by keeping our problems out of Nate’s sight. Now we didn’t have much choice but to say something. I wasn’t going to lie to him about why I was here and Theo wasn’t.

And now that I thought about it, Theo deserved to know that I’d told Nate.
I carefully got out of bed, moving as silently as possible to keep from disturbing Nate. I put on one of the fluffy white robes with the embroidered Riverside Hotel logo, took my phone off the nightstand, and stepped out onto the balcony.

Then, ignoring the queasy feeling roiling in my stomach, I speed-dialed Theo.
On the second ring, he answered with a flat, “Hey.”

“Hey.” My mouth went dry. Staring out at the city, I said, “So, um. I talked to Nate. About what’s going on.”

“Oh.” Something rustled in the background. Was he still in bed? I wasn’t even sure when he got up these days. “Um. How did he take it?”

“As good as we could’ve expected, I guess.”

Theo exhaled. “I should call him. It might be good for him to hear from both of us.”
“Yeah.” I turned around, watching Nate’s sleeping form through my semitransparent reflection. “Give him a little while, though. He’s not up yet.”

“He’s—” Theo paused. When he spoke again, his voice was cold. “So he’s still there.”
“Yeah, he’s—” I faced the city again. “Is that a problem?”

“No.” His tone suggested it clearly was a problem. “Just…could you pass the message along for him to call me when he has a chance?”

I ground my teeth and tried not to get defensive. If I’d been the one in his position, five hundred miles away while Theo broke the news to Nate, I’d probably not feel great about the situation either. “I’ll tell him.”

“Thanks.”

Silence set in. I fixed my gaze on the road below, tracking some cars as they drove past the hotel. It was something to focus on. Something besides this uncomfortable silence that I didn’t know how to break.

Theo beat me to it anyway. “I should go. Zach will be here any minute.”
I winced. “Okay. I just wanted to let you know. And I’ll have him call you as soon as he’s got some coffee in him.”

That brought a faint laugh out of him. “Sounds good. Talk to you later.”
“Talk to you later.”

I hung up, rested my elbows on the railing, and pressed my thumbs against my forehead.

Well. This was all just getting more fun by the second, wasn’t it?

LA Witt is one of the very first MM authors I ever read and one I seem to go back to time and time again. Out of Focus is one of my favorite ménage books in MM. So when I saw LA Witt had a new book with a ménage I was all for it.

What I Loved: Nate was a great character. Pretty tame as far as rock stars go, but I loved him. He was loyal to the men he loved and cared about so much that he would do whatever he could to save their marriage.

I loved the Epilogue. It was a nice way to wrap the whole story up and seemed very realistic. Things didn't just magically become perfect but it was a great ending for these men.

What I Liked: This was s great premise. The moment I read it I had to check out the book. I liked that as far as the ménage went, it was supposed to be a true triad.

What I Didn't Like: While I really enjoyed the story of Nate, Cam and Theo, I just couldn't help but wish I felt as good about them as a triad as I did about Angel, Dante and Jordan from Out of Focus. The three men in Hiatus are supposed to be an established triad, with Cam and Theo married. But I didn't completely feel like they were equal, how could they be when there were so many secrets between them. Nate was kept completely out of the loop about what was happening in Theo and Cam's marriage, not knowing they were having problems. This doesn't really portray an equal partnership.

I also did not like the fact that they honestly believed they could alternate weekends with him. First, he's not a child, you aren't sharing custody. Second, you have just secured him a spot in the middle, a place most people don't like to be. Not to mention the fact that Nate fell in love with these men as a couple. He's only ever been with them as a couple. To basically make a decision to share him, only separately, without even discussing it with him was exasperating.

At first, I was saddened by what happened, but as it went on I found myself highly frustrated. These men are definitely in love, they both don't want it to be over, yet neither do anything to actively save their marriage or address their problems. They each have evident issues that realistically can not just be swept under the carpet or fixed on their own. The fact that they refuse to get professional help throughout most of the book made me mad.

By the end of the book, I was happy to see things getting better for the men as individuals as well as a couple and finally as a triad.

3 Stars!

About the Author:
L.A. Witt is an abnormal M/M romance writer who has finally been released from the purgatorial corn maze of Omaha, Nebraska, and now spends her time on the southwestern coast of Spain. In between wondering how she didn't lose her mind in Omaha, she explores the country with her husband, several clairvoyant hamsters, and an ever-growing herd of rabid plot bunnies. She also has substantially more time on her hands these days, as she has recruited a small army of mercenaries to search South America for her nemesis, romance author Lauren Gallagher, but don't tell Lauren. And definitely don't tell Lori A. Witt or Ann Gallagher. Neither of those twits can keep their mouths shut…
